Country Estates and Cultural History
The Landgoederen Paterswolde nature area comprises the De Braak, Vennebroek and De Duinen country estates. At Landgoed De Braak, the park woodland was designed in the landscape style around 1825 by landscape architect Roodbaard. The style refers to a deliberately designed park landscape; Roodbaard also links the design to a specific creator.
The “De Duinen” memorial in Paterswolde was erected in memory of Herman (Hans) van Hessen, a Jewish person who went into hiding. It adds a personal theme of remembrance to the history of the landscape and buildings. Huis Schelfhorst in Paterswolde is a residential tower surrounded by a moat. Here, the focus is on a distinctive building form and its immediate architectural setting.
Only the western Schathuis, or outbuilding, and the gardens remain of the original Landgoed Lemferdinge. The Culturele Raad Eelde holds exhibitions and presentations in the gallery on the upper floor. The programme may change; if you are interested, check what is currently on before your visit.
Nature, Water and Cycling Routes
Near Paterswolde, Friese Veen consists of swamp woodland, reed beds and open water. From a birdwatching hut, you can enjoy views of the area and a good view of the cormorant colony. There is parking for access to Friese Veen along the Hoofdweg, near number 266 (9765 CM). If travelling by bus, get off in Paterswolde at the Noordwijk or Vennerstraat stops. Zwembad Lemferdinge is also easily reached from Groningen or Haren by bicycle or public transport. Check current services before travelling, as the transport network may change.
The Parkbosroute at Landgoed De Braak is 2.52 km long. There are numerous walking and cycling paths at and around the Paterswoldsemeer. Another named cycling tour is the Fietsroute De Onlanden, which starts at Kijkboerderij 't Hoge veld on Helmerdijk in Paterswolde.
Highlights of the Fietsroute Paterswoldsemeer include a fish passage, Vissenbossen, the newly laid Woudzandpad and nature-friendly shores. These features are linked to the water management project completed in 2025. The Paterswoldsemeer also has a sunbathing lawn, a small sandy beach for swimming and a dedicated bathing jetty. As recreational facilities can change, it is worth checking the current situation before your visit.
