Borger combines prehistoric monuments with walking trails and distinctive architectural history. Hunebed D27 stands right next to the Hunebedcentrum, and the Bijvoetpad passes other dolmens. The tower of the Dutch Reformed Church and the De Speulkoel open-air theatre also add their own distinctive touches. This means a trip to Borger can be shaped around different interests – from visiting a large stone monument to walking with a digital guide.

D27, the Hunebedcentrum and the church tower

Hunebed D27 measures 22.5 metres and is the largest dolmen in the Netherlands. The Hunebedcentrum is right next to it, on the Hondsrug sandy ridge in Drenthe. Visitors can view ancient objects and play interactive games there. So, alongside the monumental stone structure, the centre also focuses on objects and games. If you would like to include both in your visit, combine a specific megalithic tomb with further insights into prehistory.

Looking beyond D27 also takes you into the surrounding region: 16 of Drenthe’s 52 dolmens are in Borger and its surroundings. The figure explicitly covers both the town and its surrounding area. If you want to consider the broader context of Drenthe’s dolmens rather than just one monument, this gives you a useful guide for shaping your trip around the subject.

The Dutch Reformed Church in Borger offers a different historical perspective. It is dedicated to Saint Willibrord. Its 27-metre-high tower dates from the 14th century, is made of monastery bricks and rests on a foundation of large erratic boulders. The transition from brickwork to a foundation of erratic boulders makes the construction easy to appreciate and clearly distinguishes the church tower from the prehistoric stone monuments.

Walking trails with different focuses

The Bijvoetpad passes six dolmens that are about 5,000 years old: one in Borger and five in Bronneger. Their approximate age and distribution across two locations are what make this trail description distinctive. Visitors interested in the monuments can make the dolmens themselves the focus of their walking experience.

Het Oertijdpad is a 13.5-kilometre walking trail with a digital guide. It starts at the Hunebedcentrum. The two trails have different points to consider when choosing between them: the Bijvoetpad focuses on the six dolmens and their distribution, while the Oertijdpad offers a stated distance, starting point and digital guide as specific reference points. This can help you decide whether you would rather focus on a succession of dolmens or on a walk with a clearly stated length.

More culture and practical information

De Speulkoel is an open-air theatre established in 1959 near the Hunebedcentrum. It adds a different cultural point of interest alongside the prehistoric monuments: rather than dolmens and a church tower, the focus here is a purpose-built theatre venue.

When choosing a holiday rental in Borger, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: prehistory, a walk with a digital guide or historic architectural styles all lead to different interests for your day’s itinerary. De Speulkoel also offers its own cultural highlight. Weighing up these priorities for your trip can help you focus your accommodation search on the experiences that matter to you.
