Tetovo combines urban architectural history with religious traditions and the landscapes of the municipality. In the Old Town, frescoes, mosques and the history of a Bektashi complex tell of different cultural facets. When planning a trip, you can distinguish these urban impressions from the mountain and village destinations across the wider Tetovo destination area.

Old Town and architectural traces

In Tetovo’s Old Town, shops on Abdyl Frashëri Street offer embroidered clothing for special occasions and local handicrafts. The selection at individual shops may change. At the end of the street stands the house of Souleyman të V.D Alija Ixhlal; its façade frescoes date from 1804. In this historic urban setting, changing everyday offerings meet a distinctive architectural detail. If you are interested in handicrafts or architectural history, both offer different starting points for exploring the Old Town.

Mosques and Bektashi history

The Painted Mosque is near the city centre of Tetovo and close to the Pena River. It is also known as Šarena Džamija, Xhamia e Pashës or Alaca Cami. It was originally built in 1495 by the Ottoman sisters Hyrshide and Mensure Hatun; in 1833, Abdurrahman Pasha remodelled and redesigned it. The sisters’ tomb is beside the mosque. Its rich decoration is considered a significant artistic and decorative achievement of the Ottoman period in Macedonia. The building thus brings together a long history and a striking artistic feature.

Arabati Baba Teqe represents a different religious tradition. The complex was built as a Bektashi complex and developed into a well-known centre of Bektashi Islam, with religious, cultural and educational functions. Its history dates back to 1538, when the tekke was built around the türbe of the Albanian Bektashi dervish Sersem Ali Baba. A waqf endowed by Recep Paşa established the present site in 1799. The transformation from a religious complex into a centre with several historical functions sets this place apart from the individual architectural features of the Old Town.

Historic sites and landscapes in Tetovo

The old public hammam in the wider Tetovo destination area also tells of an earlier world of trade. It was built towards the end of the 15th century by Mehmet bej Çelebiu near the Shkumbin River and served aristocratic merchants for centuries as they travelled along the Via Egnatia. It was first restored and converted into an art gallery in 1968; in 2006, the hammam was restored again through a joint project involving the Ministry of Culture, the National Conservation Centre and the US Embassy in Skopje.

Tetovo Fortress on Baltepe covers 108,000 square metres and stands at an elevation of 220 to 250 metres. It is a ruined fortress and archaeological site. The complex includes a guesthouse, a dungeon, a kitchen, a dining hall and a well. The Fortress Trail also has a specific connection to the site: its most important panorama is from the fortress plateau. The view extends west towards Kobilica and across the entire ridge of the Šar Mountains, from the Karanikola summit to the Crn Vrv summit.

At the municipal level, the central section of the Šar Mountains covers most of the Tetovo area. At 2,747 metres, Titov Vrv is the highest peak in Tetovo Municipality and also the highest peak in the Šar Mountains. Popova Šapka has been operating since 1934 and is one of the oldest ski centres in the Balkans. In the other months, it serves as a starting point for hiking and cycling routes; check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike.

The villages offer different highlights from the urban attractions, too. Brodec lies in the northern part of Tetovo Municipality on the slopes of the Šar Mountains and is characterised by old traditional houses with stone-slab roofs. Hikers and cyclists often use the village as a starting point for trips to the Vrtop summit. Veshala, in turn, is known for its proximity to the Great and Small Karanikola glacial lakes. Historic buildings, mountain trails and village architecture thus offer distinct interests to consider when planning a trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on your priorities first: if you mainly want to explore the Old Town, mosques and historic buildings, choose Tetovo as your search destination. For a trip focused more on mountain and village scenery, include destinations at the municipal level in your plans. Tetovo bus station offers daily connections to Skopje, Gostivar, Kumanovo and Ohrid, as well as international connections to Albania, Kosovo and other neighbouring countries. Check current routes and timetables before your trip.
