Discover Popova Shapka
Accommodation in Popova Shapka
Popova Shapka combines a strong connection to winter sports with a broader mountain setting: the ski centre is part of Shar Mountain National Park. During the rest of the year, Popova Shapka serves as a starting point for hiking and cycling routes. So when planning a trip, it is worth first deciding which season you would like to visit and what you would like to focus on during your stay.
The ski centre and seasonal highlights
Popova Shapka Ski Centre has been in operation since 1934 and is one of the oldest ski centres in the Balkans. Its infrastructure includes 11 ski lifts with a total length of 7.7 kilometres. These figures give an idea of the resort’s winter-sports character, though a trip need not be focused solely on skiing. If skiing is central to your stay, check whether the lifts will be operating on your travel dates.
The focus changes during the rest of the year: Popova Shapka then serves as a starting point for hiking and cycling routes. Skiing, on the one hand, and hiking or cycling, on the other, offer different ways to plan your trip. If you are travelling as a family, this seasonal difference can help you choose when to go: consider which of these activities matters most for your days together.
Mountain scenery in the wider area
The wider region around the destination of Tetovo also offers striking landscapes. Bogovinjsko Ezero is the largest glacial lake in the Šar Mountains. It lies at an altitude of 1,960 metres and covers an area of 66,880 square metres. These details establish the lake as a distinct feature of the region’s mountain landscape; it should not be confused with the ski centre.
Another landscape feature is Titov Vrv: at 2,747 metres, it is the highest peak in Tetovo Municipality and in the Šar Mountains. The lake and the peak represent different interests within the wider destination: one offers a high-altitude waterscape, while the other is the highest point in the municipality and the mountain range.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
An asphalt road leads to the centre of Popova Shapka. The 7-kilometre cable car route is described as having an elevation difference of 1,400 metres and a journey time of 40 minutes. If this ride is important to your plans, check in advance whether the cable car is currently operating.
When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to be clear about what you want to focus on: do you want Popova Shapka, its ski centre, and its seasonal hiking and cycling routes to be at the heart of your trip, or are you particularly interested in Tetovo’s cultural sights? These themes offer different considerations when choosing where to stay; let what matters most to you on your trip guide your search.
Culture and history in Tetovo
Tetovo adds its own architectural and cultural history to the region’s landscapes. The old public hammam was built near the Shkumbin River by Mehmet bej Çelebiu towards the end of the 15th century. For centuries, it served aristocratic merchants travelling along the Via Egnatia. It was first restored and converted into an art gallery in 1968; in 2006, the hammam was restored again through a joint project by the Ministry of Culture, the National Conservation Centre, and the US Embassy in Skopje.
The Šarena Džamija, also known as Xhamia e Pashës or Alaca Cami, is located near the Pena River in Tetovo. The Ottoman sisters Hyrshide and Mensure Hatun originally built it in 1495. Abdurrahman Pasha renovated and redesigned the mosque in 1833; the sisters’ tomb is next to the building. The mosque’s history thus combines its founding by two sisters with a major later redesign.
Arabati-Baba-Tekḱe, also known in Tetovo as Arabati Baba Teqe or Harabati Baba Tekkesi, has a long history as well. It was originally built in 1538 around the türbe of the Albanian Bektashi dervish Sersem Ali Baba. A waqf endowed by Recep Paşa established the present grounds in 1799. Tetovo Fortress is another testament to regional history: a ruined fortress and archaeological site.
For getting around Tetovo, the bus station offers daily services to Skopje, Gostivar, Kumanovo, and Ohrid, as well as international services to Albania, Kosovo, and other neighbouring countries. Routes and timetables may change, so check them before travelling. This makes it possible to consider the cultural and scenic interests within the destination of Tetovo separately and give them the emphasis you want when planning your holiday.
