Kriva Palanka brings together a clearly defined city history, architecture and a variety of cultural events. Visitors can focus on three themes: the city’s founding on the road to Bulgaria, the Church of Sveti Dimitrie, and events centred on food or folklore. When choosing a holiday rental, it is also important to distinguish the city from its municipality: the Sveti Joakim Osogovski Monastery complex lies outside the city, 3 km to the east.

Founded on the Road to Bulgaria

In 1633, Bayram Pasha, a vizier of Sultan Murad I, founded the fortified settlement of Egri Dere on the road to Bulgaria. The settlement was intended to protect passage through the Krivorečka Klisura. The former name Egri Dere and Bayram Pasha’s role add a place name and a historical figure to the founding date. The settlement’s defensive purpose also connects its history with the road to Bulgaria and the Krivorečka Klisura. Those who enjoy understanding places through their origins will find more than a year: the name, location and purpose form part of the same historical context.

A Church in the City, a Monastery in the Municipality

Another way to explore the city’s history is through the Church of Sveti Dimitrie in Kriva Palanka. It was built in 1833 and has the floor plan of a three-aisled basilica. “Three-aisled” describes a layout divided into three naves; the term therefore refers to the building’s design, while the year places the church in time. These two details offer different points of reference for anyone interested in historic architecture. The building’s history can thus be explored not only through a date, but also through a specific feature of its design.

The Sveti Joakim Osogovski Monastery complex dates from the 11th century and is located in the municipality, 3 km east of Kriva Palanka. It lies outside the city and is therefore in a different geographical setting from the Church of Sveti Dimitrie in town. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you want to focus primarily on Kriva Palanka itself or also include the monastery complex as a historic point of interest in the municipality. This distinction helps ensure that the city and the site outside it are not treated as the same destination.

Food and Cultural Events

The events also offer a range of different highlights. “Šopska Sofra” is a traditional food event held every year as part of Kriva Palanka’s city holiday on 8 October. Pivtijada takes place on 19 January in Kriva Palanka’s town square, after the ceremonial cross-throwing into the Kriva Reka has concluded. The International Folklore Festival “Sveti Joakim Osogovski” takes place in Kriva Palanka on 25, 26 and 27 August; it includes a parade of participants as well as an outdoor programme.

For your trip planning, you can distinguish the dates by their focus: the food event in October, Pivtijada in January after the ceremony at the Kriva Reka, or folklore with a parade and outdoor programme in August. If you want to plan your visit around a particular event, check the date for your preferred time of travel.
