At Lake Mavrovo, changing water levels reveal traces of past buildings. When the lake reaches its highest level, only part of the roof and half of the bell tower of the old submerged church in Mavrovo can be seen. In summer, when the water level is lower, stone grave slabs and archaic tuff crosses become visible at the Sv. Nikola archaeological site. If you want to see these traces, it is better to plan your visit around the water level rather than a particular month alone.

Cave and hiking trail in Mavrovo

Šarkova Dupka Cave offers a different kind of nature experience. Its entrance can be reached by a roughly ten-minute walk along a prepared path with steps. The cave is open to organised groups and is suitable for educational visits and excursions. Plan your visit as a group outing and check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

If you would rather include a hike in your day’s plans, consider the route from Mavrovo to Chavkarnik. It starts at the ski centre in Mavrovo and ends in the village of Chavkarnik, near a sheepfold. The stated endpoints give the route a clear direction, so your outing need not be limited to simply looking at the lake. The description thus connects a starting point in Mavrovo with a destination near Chavkarnik; choose this hike if that particular route suits your plans.

History and culture in the Mavrovo And Rostuša destination

In the wider destination of Mavrovo And Rostuša, St. Nicholas Church also tells the story of the area. It was built in 1857 in the then-existing field of Mavrovo. In 1957, it was flooded during construction of the Mavrovo hydroelectric facilities.

Galichnik also adds its own cultural events to your travel plans: the Galichnik Wedding Festival takes place every year on Peter’s Day, July 12; the Art Colony in Galichnik is held annually in August. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the latest announcements and event dates before travelling.

For an outing in nature in the wider destination, Duf Waterfall lies at the end of Duf Gorge and is about 25 metres high. A marked, easy-to-walk path leads there from the centre of Rostuše in about 30 minutes. The path is steep in several places; a wooden railing protects these sections. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Find a holiday apartment to suit your planned activities

When looking for a holiday apartment in Mavrovo, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore the changing traces by the lake, plan a group visit to the cave, or include the hiking trail to Chavkarnik?
