Rostushe offers a natural attraction nearby: the path to the Duf Waterfalls leads through the Duf Gorge, which is up to 60 metres high. At the end of the gorge is the Duf Waterfall, which is about 25 metres high. The excursion combines a striking gorge landscape with a clear destination, giving your stay a specific focus if you enjoy spending time outdoors.

The path and waterfall near Rostushe

The Duf Waterfalls can be reached from the centre of Rostuše in about 30 minutes via a marked path that runs through the gorge. The path is well laid out and secured with a wooden railing. It is steep in several places, but easy to walk for the most part. If you are planning the excursion with children, take the steep sections into account when making your own assessment. Path conditions can change; check them before setting out.

There are several benches near the waterfall where you can rest; check whether they are usable when you visit. The remains of the region’s first hydroelectric power station are also along the path. The power station used to supply the region with electricity. So, as you walk through the gorge, you will encounter traces of the region’s former energy supply as well as the natural attraction.

More destinations in the wider Mavrovo and Rostuša destination

The Galichnik Wedding Festival takes place in Galichnik every year on St Peter’s Day (Petrovden), 12 July. The Art Colony in Galichnik is also held annually, in August. If you are planning to attend either event, check the latest announcements and dates for that year’s edition before your trip.

The Church of St Nicholas is part of Mavrovo’s history. It was built in 1857 on the then-existing field of Mavrovo and was flooded in 1957 during the construction of Mavrovo’s hydroelectric facilities. In rare cases, when the lake level drops, the flooded church becomes visible. Its history thus brings together construction, flooding and rare visibility dependent on the water level.

Sharkova Dupka Cave can be visited in organised groups. An illuminated metal staircase leads to the first underground chamber. If you are including the cave in your travel plans, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Another hiking trail starts at the Mavrovo ski centre and ends at the Chavkarnik site near the sheepfold. Unlike the trail to the Duf Waterfalls, this one is defined by a named starting point and a specific destination: the route runs from the ski centre to Chavkarnik.

Plan your trip and holiday apartment

When looking for a holiday apartment in Rostushe, you can start by deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay.
