Lazaropole: Mijak Heritage and the Church Below Sokolica
Accommodation in Lazaropole
Lazaropole invites you to discover cultural history at specific places: at a church dedicated to St. Spas below the summit of Sokolica, and at historic sites along the Lazaropole–Rosoki route. At the same time, the Lazarovci continue to preserve their Mijak identity to this day. For trip planning, this creates a local focus on architecture, traditions and history; the wider destination of Mavrovo and Rostuša also offers further cultural and natural attractions.
The Church and Mijak Identity
A small church dedicated to St. Spas stands on the path below the summit of Sokolica. Its location and dedication make it a clear point of interest for travelers interested in places shaped by religion. The Lazarovci continue to preserve their Mijak identity to this day; it is considered an important part of the cultural and historical heritage of the Mijaks and the Reka region. In Lazaropole, a sacred building and a continuing cultural identity thus offer different ways to explore history.
Historic Sites Along the Lazaropole–Rosoki Route
The Lazaropole–Rosoki route passes Glavino Selo and Kalina Dupka. Both are historic sites associated with important traditions from Mijak history. The focus here is therefore on two places and their connections to Mijak history. This adds another cultural highlight to the church below Sokolica.
In the Wider Destination of Mavrovo and Rostuša
Recurring cultural events can also shape your travel plans. The Galichnik Wedding Festival is held in Galichnik every year on St. Peter’s Day (Petrovden), July 12; the Art Colony in Galichnik takes place every year in August. This offers two different timeframes for culture enthusiasts. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the latest announcements in advance.
The Church of St. Nicholas in Mavrovo offers a different kind of historical experience. It was built in 1857 on what was then the existing field of Mavrovo, and was flooded in 1957 during construction of the Mavrovo hydroelectric facilities. The submerged church becomes visible only on rare occasions, when the lake level drops. Its story connects a specific building with profound changes in Mavrovo; its visibility depends on the rare lowering of the water level.
Sharkova Dupka Cave can be visited in organized groups. A lit metal staircase leads down to its first underground chamber. If you would like to plan a cave visit, check the current arrangements in advance.
Duf Waterfall lies at the end of Duf Gorge and is about 25 meters high. A marked trail leads from the center of Rostuše through Duf Gorge to Duf Waterfalls. The trail is listed as taking about 30 minutes; it is considered easy to walk, but is steep in several places and secured with a wooden railing. As trail conditions can change, check them before your hike.
Choose a Focus for Your Holiday Apartment Search
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide early on what you want to focus on: should Lazaropole, with its Mijak history and historic sites, be at the center of your trip, or would you also like to consider events and natural attractions in the wider destination of Mavrovo and Rostuša? If you have several interests, you can weigh cultural history, scheduled events, a cave visit and a hike as different planning options. This lets you choose a search area based on the places and experiences that matter to you.
