Discover Strassen: Forest, Art and Festivals
Accommodation in Strassen
Strassen offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: a large communal forest, art and culture, festivals, and specific opportunities to enjoy cycling and other activities. This makes the town an interesting choice for anyone looking for more than a single excursion when choosing a holiday rental. Consider whether forest trails, cultural events, regional products or cycling are most important for your trip.
A communal forest with a variety of trails
Strassen’s communal forest covers 418 ha. It has 21 km of walking trails and 16 km of riding trails. These separate figures help distinguish between the different ways to explore the area: on foot or on horseback. For families whose travel plans take different preferences into account, these are two clearly defined options that do not need to be combined into a single itinerary.
Signposted trails lead to a health trail and an educational forest trail. Their names already point to two ways of experiencing the forest: exercise and learning about the forest. So, if you are planning to focus your stay on nature, there is more than one way to discover the communal forest.
Art and culture at the Centre culturel Paul Barblé
The Centre culturel Paul Barblé is located in the centre of Strassen and is housed in the former Barblé residence. The complex includes a music hall and visual arts workshops. The Centre culturel Paul Barblé is also a cultural centre for exhibitions and cultural events. This gives Strassen’s cultural scene a specific location, with both event venues and workspaces for art.
The complex is also home to the A Spiren art gallery. National and international artists regularly exhibit in its two exhibition spaces. This gives the gallery a distinct place within the cultural offering: it hosts changing exhibitions with a clear focus on visual art. If you like to include cultural venues in your trip, you can consider this alongside spending time outdoors when deciding on Strassen.
Festivals and cultural dates
The Spill mat family festival has been held every year since 2010 on 23 June, the National Day, at Parc Riedgen. The Stroossefestival was launched in 2002 and has been held every two years in early September ever since. The two events differ in their timing and frequency: Spill mat takes place on a set date every year, while the Stroossefestival is held every two years at the beginning of September. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the date in advance.
The history of the Biennale d’art contemporain is also clearly dated: the first biennial in Strassen was established in 2001 by the municipality’s cultural commission. It adds a historical connection to the visual arts in the town to the calendar of events, without replacing a visit to the gallery A Spiren’s current exhibition spaces.
Cycling route, skate park and regional products
The official cycling tour L’Ouest du Luxembourg passes through Strassen via the signposted PC1 route. For cycling travellers, PC1 is therefore a specific point of reference when comparing destinations. Another place to enjoy an active pursuit is Skatepark Stroossen, which covers an area of 2,350 m². The Spillplaz – Beim Fräiheetsbam playground is located at Fräiheetsbam (CR181) in Strassen. These places cater to different interests and do not need to be combined into one day’s itinerary.
The regional offering may also be worth considering. Regional products, fruit, vegetables and meat are available in Strassen; baked goods are available in both conventional and organic varieties. The selection may change. If you would like to include regional products in your plans for a stay in a holiday rental, this is another factor to consider when choosing your destination. You can assess Strassen based on your specific preferences: the forest, culture, events, cycling or regional food may each be the deciding factor.
