Eischen combines cultural history with paths through a varied landscape. The St-Pierre-aux-Liens Church, the Eisch, the “Trois Ponts” viaduct and the “Attert cycle path (PC 12)” offer different perspectives on the town. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Eischen can therefore tailor their stay to their own interests: historical discoveries, a hike, a bike tour or a combination of several experiences.

Church and historical traces in Eischen

The St-Pierre-aux-Liens Church is a prominent cultural landmark. It was built between 1862 and 1865 according to plans by the architect Antoine Hartmann. The Baroque furnishings of the former chapel have been preserved inside the three-nave church. Its history goes back further: as early as 1550, a chapel was built on the site where the church of Eischen now stands.

The “Trois Ponts” viaduct is also one of the town’s notable structures. Following its restoration, it was officially inaugurated on 19 November 2010. The “Trois Ponts” site is listed in the supplementary inventory of nationally protected buildings and objects. This means that, in addition to nature trails, Eischen also offers points of interest for travellers interested in architectural history and historic townscapes.

The Eisch, quarries and protected landscape

The Eisch shapes several of the experiences described around Eischen. Between February and December 2023, a 200-metre section of the river in Eischen was renaturalised. Those who want to discover the town through its landscape will also find a special connection with nature in the Schwaarzenhaff nature reserve: the Jongebësch quarries near Eischen are one of two areas there in particular need of protection.

These different facets make choosing the day’s programme appealing. You can focus on places of cultural and historical interest or choose a route where the Eisch and the landscape play a larger role. The information can be easily taken into account when searching for accommodation, without restricting the trip to just one activity.

Cycling and hiking: two different route experiences

For cycling tours, the “Attert cycle path (PC 12)” runs through Eischen. The route is 53.62 kilometres long, has a moderate level of difficulty and runs from Pétange to Colmar-Berg. In Eischen, the cycle path crosses the Eisch again and climbs gently towards “Rommebierg”. There, it bypasses “Rommebierg” through a 700-metre-long, illuminated tunnel excavated through Luxembourg sandstone. These specific route features give the bike tour a distinctive character.

A different perspective is offered by the “Circuit Auto-Pédestre Eischen” circular hiking trail. It crosses the Eisch and follows a cycle path. After a detour to Gaichel on the Belgian border, it returns to the starting point via the “Sentier des Sept Châteaux” national hiking trail. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a longer cycling-route experience and a circular hiking trail with several sections.

Which base suits your travel plans?

A holiday apartment in Eischen is particularly suitable if you want to explore the town itself and the trails described here. For a culturally oriented stay, the church and viaduct are the main attractions. Those who prefer to stay active can include the circular hiking trail or the cycle path running through Eischen in their daily itinerary.
