In Panevėžys District, discoveries range from unusual museums and traditional craft venues to trails and viewpoints in nature. The Įstros Aircraft Museum is Lithuania’s only open-air museum of aircraft replicas. It is open in all weather and throughout the year—a destination not limited to a particular season. There are also places to visit with a very different character: a lookout tower in Krekenava Regional Park, historic sites in Upytė and regional bridal traditions.

Nature and views in the regional park and Senvagė

Built in 2014, the lookout tower in Krekenava Regional Park stands next to the visitor centre. The steel structure is asymmetrical, supported by guy wires and 30 metres tall. In the Nevėžis Valley, a 1.6-kilometre educational trail runs alongside a horseshoe-shaped oxbow lake, with a viewing platform nearby. The tower and trail offer different perspectives on the park: when planning your day, you can choose between a striking viewpoint and a trail of a set length.

Senvagė also offers various ways to spend time outdoors. It has cycling and walking paths, as well as sports, play, leisure and viewing facilities. Sculptures created by artists and events add to what is on offer; walks with views of the natural landscape are also possible. On summer weekends, the fountain hosts an evening water, light and music show. If you are planning a visit, you can include this seasonal evening event as a separate item in your itinerary.

Crafts, history and special collections

In Upytė, the Centre for Traditional Crafts was established on the grounds of Upytė Manor. The manor’s granary stands right next to it. The centre regularly hosts a variety of events and exhibitions, and its educational programmes are popular. Here, crafts and the buildings of the former manor stand side by side. Upytė Hillfort is also known as Tarnagalos and Čičinsko kalnas, and is likewise located in Upytė.

Other cultural destinations focus on different things: the Museum of Historical Christmas Ornaments in Miežiškiai is dedicated to old Christmas tree decorations. The “Mėnulio akmens” Sculpture Park is an open-air exhibition of contemporary art and also an open-air museum. The Panevėžys Puppet Theatre claims to be the only theatre of its kind in Europe. This gives you a choice of what to put at the centre of your stay: historic objects, crafts, sculpture or theatre.

Regional traditions and reasons to visit

Old brewing traditions have survived in Aukštaitija, particularly in Panevėžys, Biržai and Pasvalys districts. This adds a regional cultural dimension to the museums and nature destinations. From Panevėžys, you can also take special or educational trips on the Aukštaitija Narrow Gauge Railway; they depart from Panevėžys city railway station. Along with the trails, museums and craft venues, these offer a choice of different themes for excursions, without requiring every outing to be the same kind of day.

When choosing your holiday rental, consider which of these interests will shape your trip most: views and walks, crafts and history, special collections or regional traditions. That way, you can tailor your search to your preferred focus instead of reducing the different experiences to a single type of excursion.
