Culture and History

Å akiai is a small town in Lithuania's MarijampolÄ— County and the seat of the municipal administration of Å akiai District Municipality.

The first church in Å akiai was founded in 1719. When the town received city rights in the mid-19th century, it had four schools.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Å akiai was built in 1842; its tower was added in 1877.

Å akiai was heavily destroyed during the Second World War. This destruction forms part of the documented historical context of the city.
