White sandy beaches, a long pier and museums with very different collections define Palanga. The town offers a variety of reasons to stay: time by the sea can be combined with art, history and events. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider whether you are mainly planning days at the beach or would also like to include museums and cultural attractions in your trip.

The beach and sea as defining features

White sandy beaches are among the most visited places in Palanga today. The Palanga Sea Pier is also part of the town’s character: the structure is 470 metres long and was built on concrete piles in 1998. In the evening, visitors can sit on the benches and watch the sunsets.

Birutė Hill offers a different view of the sea. It rises 21 metres above sea level and affords a view of the sea. Birutė Park was laid out on the grounds of the former Birutė Forest and Birutė Hill. Alongside the beach, the park and its views offer other ways to experience Palanga.

Amber, collections and art

At the Palanga Amber Museum, amber and its inclusions are showcased in an extensive collection: the museum has one of the world’s largest collections of amber inclusions and unique amber objects, with more than 30,000 exhibits in total. Guided tours are offered in Lithuanian, English and Russian and last approximately one hour. If you plan to visit the museum, you can take this approximate duration and the languages offered into account when planning your day.

The Palanga Resort Museum is dedicated to museum treasures, Palanga’s visual heritage and cultural treasures discovered during archaeological research in Palanga. It preserves, studies and presents these holdings and hosts contemporary and historical exhibitions from Lithuania and abroad. The museum is also equipped with wide passageways and a lift.

The Antanas Mončys Art Museum offers a different way to engage with art: visitors are allowed to touch the sculptures. More than 200 sculptures, drawings, graphic works, collages, pipes and masks are exhibited on the second floor. At Palanga Sculpture Park, visitors can see 28 sculptures transferred to the Palanga municipal administration by a Lithuanian art museum. Since the chessboard was renovated in 2020, visitors can also play giant chess outdoors.

Events and experiences

In summer, the Birutė Park rotunda traditionally hosts free concerts by the professional Palanga Orchestra on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. The Palanga Cultural Centre at the Palanga Kurhaus organises more than 250 different events each year, including concerts, celebrations for national and calendar holidays, and festivals. In the theatre hall of the Palanga Kurhaus, the Palanga Grubusis Theatre uses the space for performances, non-commercial films, conferences and rehearsals.

There are also various ideas for active exploration. Several cycling routes run through the resort and along the coast; together, they span several dozen kilometres. On walking orienteering games, participants solve puzzles, discover hidden details and answer questions along the route. The Musical Fountain combines music, light and water during the warm season. Travellers with different interests can weigh up options ranging from exercise, art and music to quieter moments by the sea, rather than focusing their stay on just one type of experience.

Finding your way around town

Jonas Basanavičius Street is Palanga’s central street and the main street leading to the pier. One specific distance to bear in mind when travelling here is that Palanga International Airport is 7 kilometres from Palanga city centre. This does not allow a specific journey time to be determined, but the distance helps distinguish the city centre from the airport when planning your arrival.

The Neo-Gothic Palanga Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has an impressive pulpit and three artistically designed altars with French marble reliefs. The viewing platform in the church tower offers a bird’s-eye view of Palanga’s cityscape and the sea. Admission to the platform is free; access is not permitted during services, weddings and other ceremonies.
