Preila was established around 1850 through the settlement of Curonian fishing families from Neegeln and Karwaiten. The villages of Neegeln and Karwaiten, located near Preila, were buried beneath the sand of shifting dunes; toward the end of the 19th century, the sand was stabilized through planting.
