Steep coastal cliffs, marshland, maritime craft traditions, and historic places give Klaipėda District Municipality a varied character. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may help to first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: nature and trails, history and culture, or excursions connected with the water and fishing traditions. The region offers a range of ways to explore these interests.

Coastal cliffs and trails through the landscape

The coastal cliff section known as Olandų Kepurė is one of the municipality’s geological natural heritage sites. If you are interested in the landscape, you can include this stretch of coast as a destination in its own right in your travel plans. The “Paukščių takai” hiking trail offers another perspective on nature: the 14-kilometre route runs both ways from the small marina in Dreverna to the birdwatching tower in Tyrų Marsh. The stated distance therefore covers the route in both directions.

The “Kuršių kelias” cycling route also passes through the Klaipėda District, with two sections: Nemirseta–Giruliai and Dreverna–Svencelė. Together with the hiking route, these offer different ways to spend time outdoors. When looking for accommodation, you can then consider which of the places mentioned are especially important to your trip and which route or experience you would like to focus on.

Maritime crafts and history

The permanent interactive exhibition “J. Gižas. Laivadirbio skrynią atvėrus...” explores the craft of shipbuilding, the tradition of building Curonian lagoon fishing boats, and life in the lagoon region. It therefore focuses not only on boats, but also on the way of life in which this craft tradition has its place. The Gargždų krašto muziejus covers the history of Klaipėda District and the town of Gargždai; the museum also presents works by various artists.

A historical trail leads to Kalniškės (Gargždų) piliakalnis. The hill is associated with the Curonian castle of Garisda, mentioned in a document dated 4 April 1253. This document is the first written record of Gargždai. The restored site is a tourist destination offering a view of Gargždai. This makes historical context and a view of the town two aspects of the same place to visit.

Excursions with children and on the water

Dinozaurų parkas in Radailiai is home to more than 52 life-size dinosaurs that hiss, spray water, and roar. Educational activities are organised there for schoolchildren, preschoolers, and children’s groups. The attraction in Radailiai also includes an upside-down house, which stands on its roof and where everything is turned upside down. These experiences are quite different from the quieter nature and history destinations and may influence your choice of excursions.

Groups of up to 30 people can hire the “Dreverna” ship for leisure trips on the Curonian Lagoon. The “Žuvies kelias” culinary cruise offers another way to combine the water with regional food culture. It travels across the Curonian Lagoon, the Nemunas Delta, the Minija River, and the King Wilhelm Canal, and includes dishes from the fish cultural heritage. If you are especially interested in the maritime side of the region, this offers a different way to explore it than a hike or museum visit.

Places and the character of your trip

The marked West Lithuanian Way of St. James, an international pilgrimage, educational, and cultural route, also passes through Klaipėda District. The choice therefore ranges from a clearly defined hiking route to historical and cultural destinations and excursions on the water. When searching for a holiday apartment, you may find it useful to use your planned activities to guide your choice of location: what matters is which destinations you would especially like to visit during your stay.

Places in Klaipėda District include Dovilai, Agluonėnai, Baubliai, Svencelė, Medsėdžiai, Venckai, Baukštininkai, Toleikiai and Ginduliai.
