Dievogala: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The site of the Jewish massacre and the grave in Dievogala together form a nationally significant cultural heritage site of historical and memorial value. At the site, around 40 Jewish men from Jankai, Paežerėlis and Zapyškis were killed and buried in an execution organized by the National Socialists at the end of summer 1941.

Culture

The cultural ship and dredger “Nemuno7” together form a public cultural venue next to the Zapyškis landing stage. “Nemuno7” serves as a centre for visual art, media, technology, science and creative work. The Zapyškis landing stage at Muziejaus g. 2 in Dievogala is used for tourists to board and disembark when visiting local sights and cultural events.

The Neoclassical chapel of the old Zapyškis cemetery (“Zapyškio senųjų kapinių koplyčia”) in Dievogala was built around 1860. Old cemetery crosses are kept in the chapel, including preserved wrought-iron crosses.

The old Zapyškis cemetery is considered a significant cultural and historical site in the Suvalkija region. During the period of the Lithuanian press ban, inscriptions in Lithuanian and the local dialect were placed on stone tombstones and memorial monuments.

The old Zapyškis Church of Saint John the Baptist (“Senoji Zapyškio Šv. Jono Krikštytojo bažnyčia”) in Dievogala has a history dating back to the 16th century. It has an organ that was formerly called the “King of Lithuanian organs”.

History

In the Papiškės-Novos partisan bunker in Dievogala, nineteen partisans stayed there at different times in 1944 and 1945, hiding and receiving treatment. A guided history tour of Zapyškis is free of charge and lasts 1.5 hours.

Geographical location

The Dievogalos Švento Jono upelis is a sacred site on the edge of the Nemunas Valley. According to tradition, the water of the Dievogalos Švento Jono upelis had healing properties.
