Townscape and History

Daugai is an urbanistic monument in southern Lithuania. The town plan is linear and features distinctive rectangular layout elements.

Daugai was first mentioned in written records in 1384 and was referred to as a town in 1503.

The central part of Daugai’s historic town layout, created around 1560, was expanded in 1928.

Archaeological investigations were carried out in the historic part of Daugai in 2013. A total of 42 test trenches were examined and 89 finds were recorded, including pottery fragments from the 16th to the 18th century.

A Catholic church was built in Daugai in 1862.

Location

Daugai is located in Alytus District Municipality in Alytus County in southern Lithuania, 22 km east of Alytus and the same distance northwest of Varėna.

Daugai is located 1 km south of Highway 128, the Naujieji Valkininkai–Daugai–Alytus route.
