Vaiņode is a destination for travelers who want to combine Latvian local history, unusual memorial sites, and activities across the changing seasons. Highlights include a former railway station building, a distinctive hymn stone, traces of a former military airfield, and the nearby Volzbahs hill. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you want to spend your days mainly exploring the town’s cultural attractions or taking trips around Volzbahs.

Railway Station, Museum, and Hymn Stone

The Vaiņode Museum is located in Vaiņode’s historic former railway station building in the town center. The building opened in 1872 and was historically an important hub for military transport. As a result, the station tells not only the story of the railway but also of the town’s strategic importance. Anyone interested in architecture and regional history will find a concentrated introduction to Vaiņode’s past here.

The Vaiņode hymn stone stands in the square next to the railway station building. Its engraving shows the Latvian national anthem. The stone is considered the only known object of its kind in Latvia to date, giving the town center a distinctive feature of its own. The bell of the former Bāte–Vaiņode Church, which can be seen in the churchyard, is also part of the town’s historic setting. During a cultural walk, these different memorial sites can be brought together conceptually as the theme of a day without confusing their individual histories.

Military History by Prior Arrangement

One particularly striking site is Vaiņode airfield. It was formerly a Soviet military airfield and was among the largest military airfields in the Baltics. Sixteen hangars and 1,800 meters of the former 2,500-meter runway remain on the site. Prior telephone registration is required for visits and tours. You should take this requirement into account when planning your day if the airfield’s history is an important reason for your trip.

Vaiņode’s railway connection also has a clear historical boundary: the Priekule–Vaiņode railway section is closed and no longer in use. For arrival and excursion planning, this means that you should not plan to use this section as a current rail connection. The history of the railway station and the surviving traces of the airfield, on the other hand, are well suited to a trip focused on the past and visible relics.

Volzbahs in Every Season

Volzbahs hill lies 2 kilometers from the center of Vaiņode and offers a different pace from the historic sites in the town center. In winter, it has a more than 100-meter-long slope for skiing, snowboarding, or sledding. During the rest of the year, equipped areas are available for picnics, walks, and photo shoots. This allows you to shape your trip differently depending on the season: winter descents or quieter outdoor time with a walk and picnic.

Traditions and Unusual Collections

Vaiņode has a history of theater traditions, choirs, and gymnastics events. A distinctive, extensively researched traditional costume is worn by amateur groups during performances. These cultural connections give the town a social dimension that extends beyond individual buildings and monuments.

Another unusual attraction is a private collection of sewing machines in Vaiņode. It includes machines from various countries, ranging from pre-war models to products from the Soviet era. The owner supplements the collection with enthusiastic stories about almost every sewing machine. For travelers interested in culture, it offers a special perspective on everyday history and technology.
