Discover Rude: Culture, Traditions and Local Stories
Accommodation in Rude
Rude between Collections, School and Living Tradition
Rude can be discovered through its local collections, the history of Rude School and the living traditions of the Otaņķi area. Those wishing to combine a trip with cultural discoveries will find unusual themes here: from Stone Age originals and horse harnesses to old singing and bread-making traditions. When looking for a holiday apartment in Rude, it is therefore worth deciding first which experiences should shape your stay.
Collections with a Personal Connection
The Otaņķu senlietu krātuve collects, preserves and displays objects donated by local residents. The originals range from the Stone Age to the present day. A visit must be arranged in advance; guided tours last up to one hour. This makes the collection particularly suitable for travellers who wish to plan their cultural programme carefully.
Another special stop is the Seno zirglietu šķūnis, also known as Ratnīca. Donated horse harnesses are displayed there. At the same time, the exhibition provides information about their use and local horse-care customs in Otaņķi. The Otaņķu ethnographic ensemble also preserves old singing styles, customs and rituals. Almost every concert talk begins with the long call typical of the Nīca cultural region.
Singing, Masks and Events
The cultural character also includes ķekatās processions during the spring masquerade. The Otaņķu ethnographic ensemble continues this tradition, which is typical of the area around Nīca; it usually takes place in February. The Otaņķu tautas nams, located in the Pagastmāja in Rude, regularly hosts concerts, performances, exhibitions, master classes and yoga classes. Depending on your travel dates, you can therefore look for a programme item focused more on music, crafts or physical activity.
The bread tradition has also been taken up in Rude with a festival of its own. The third Maizes svētki were scheduled to take place at the Rudes Estrade on 15 August 2026, dedicated to passing on bread-making traditions through practical master classes. Families with children were expected to bake ūdenskliņģeri and puļķmaizītes over an open fire and sample biguzi, a bread soup. In the Rauši competition, visitors judge the Rauši both by their appearance and by tasting them.
The History of Rude School
Rude School was built in 1875 as the third primary school in the former Nīca parish. A travelling exhibition on the school’s 150-year history comprises six roll-up panels with historical photographs of the former single-storey school building and pupils’ certificates, including certificates from the 1908/09 school year. In addition, a permanent colourful outdoor information display was created opposite the former school building. It is intended to inform passers-by and interested visitors about the school’s history.
The Otaņķu ethnographic ensemble was founded by Rasma Atteka, a teacher at Rude School. In this way, educational and cultural history come together in Rude in a particularly vivid manner, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single exhibition theme.
Pond, Windmills and Regional Specialities
At Rude Pond, there are public swings with a view of the pond and close to a path. Decorative windmills have also been installed there, and anyone can rest. An installation at the pond presents the coat of arms of Otaņķu pagasts and its origins in the Prenclavu windmills.
The local character also includes Drānu cheese. It has been made at the Vēķauši farmstead in Banažgals, in Otaņķu pagasts, for at least five generations. Alīda Vārna makes it according to the recipes of her grandmother Katrīna Bauļkalna and her mother Maiga Bernāte. Rude is part of Otaņķu pagasts, which together with Nīcas pagasts geographically forms the Nīca cultural region. Since 2022, this region has been officially recognised as particularly worthy of protection and entered on Latvia’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Rude as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip
When choosing accommodation, you can be guided by your personal interests: arrange your visit to the Otaņķu senlietu krātuve in advance, set aside time for the history of Rude School, or plan your trip around singing, crafts and regional cuisine. The combination of historical themes, cultural events and small local specialities makes Rude a destination for travellers seeking more than just a place to spend the night. For other destinations in the same travel region, you can also include Melnsils and Valgalciems in your search.
