Mazsalaca combines impressive landscapes along the Salaca with a historic manor house, distinctive crafts and vibrant traditions. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Mazsalaca can choose to focus their trip on nature experiences, cultural history or regional craftsmanship. Travel arrangements can also be easily incorporated into your planning: the Valmiera–Pärnu road runs through Mazsalaca, as does the Valka–Ainaži road.

Nature Experiences in the Salaca Valley

In Skaņākalna Nature Park, a trail approximately 6 kilometres long runs through a particularly scenic section of the Salaca Valley. Sandstone outcrops, caves, springs and pine forest shape this landscape. The route therefore offers a practical way to combine a stay in Mazsalaca with a longer hike through varied natural surroundings. Take the approximate length into account when planning your day.

Among the distinctive landscape features are the Neļķu Cliffs on the right bank of the Salaca. The red sandstone outcrop reaches 20 metres in height and extends for 300 metres, making it one of the most picturesque in Latvia. The approximately 20-metre-high Skaņākalna Cliff, also known as Skaņaiskalns, is another special attraction: it produces the strongest echo in Latvia. The rest area at Skaņākalna Cliff is also particularly suitable for canoeists and other boating enthusiasts.

Valtenberg, Gardens and Historic Buildings

Valtenberg Historic Manor is an important cultural landmark in Mazsalaca. The ensemble’s central manor house was built in 1780 at the initiative of the estate owner Vilhelms Georgs fon Falkerzāms and is an example of late Classicism on the banks of the Salaca. Today, it houses the Mazsalaca Museum. The two Baroque gardens merge into a landscaped forest park established along the Salaca in the 19th century. The avenue on Parka iela is also part of the planting around Valtenberg Manor.

From the manor park, the swaying pedestrian bridge Līgojošais crosses the Salaca to Lībiešu pilskalns and the open-air stage.

Discover Crafts and Local History

One of Mazsalaca’s distinctive features is the making of patterned double mittens. It is considered an element of intangible cultural heritage and is part of the identity of the folk crafts studio “Mazsalaca”. With this technique, the mitten is patterned on both the inside and the outside, with the colours arranged in reverse. At the Amatu māja in Mazsalaca, you can learn how they are made from skilled craftswomen and craftsmen. For families who enjoy not only sightseeing but also discovering a regional tradition while on holiday, this insight is an activity in its own right.

The town’s older architectural history includes Prāmja jeb Āža krogs, one of the oldest buildings in Mazsalaca. Since winter 2022, it has been restored as a place where visitors to the town can stop during everyday outings and celebrations. St Anne’s Church adds to the historic character: its oldest section dates from the 14th century and has walls 1.5 metres thick. In 1890, a cross-shaped section in the Gothic style was added, and it was completed in a single summer.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans?

When looking for accommodation in Mazsalaca, it is worth deciding on your preferred travel focus first. For a nature-focused stay, Skaņākalna Nature Park, the sandstone cliffs and the opportunities for canoeists are the main attractions. Those more interested in history and regional culture can consider Valtenberg, the Mazsalaca Museum, St Anne’s Church and the local craft tradition. This allows you to choose a holiday apartment or holiday house in Mazsalaca according to the planned rhythm of your trip, without attributing unsubstantiated features to the accommodation itself.

Another established local tradition is the Ērenpreisa Festival, held every year in remembrance of Gustavs Ērenpreiss’s anniversary. Depending on your personal interests, you can therefore give different weight to nature, historic sites, crafts and events. Mazsalaca offers an unusual mix of Salaca landscapes, a manor ensemble, historic church architecture and local folk art.
