Līgatne combines industrial history with a forest-rich landscape along the Gauja River.

The Paper Mill as the Centre of the Town’s History

The cultural and historical centre of the Līgatnes Papīrfabrikas settlement is an urban monument of national significance. Its history is connected with the paper mill founded in 1815. The town is particularly brought to life by its authentically preserved wooden architecture from the late 19th century. This includes workers’ houses, the factory guardhouse and guesthouse, as well as public buildings designed by Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis, the first academically trained Latvian architect.

The former working life is also present in several places. Līgatnes Papīrfabrika preserves offices and production rooms with period objects and furnishings. The apartment of the Līgatnes Papīrfabrika workers, in Latvian Līgatnes papīrfabrikas strādnieku dzīvoklis, has been restored to its historical appearance from the early 20th century. A video film about the everyday life of paper mill workers’ families is shown there; its story is based on the account of an eyewitness.

If you would like to explore the history in more than just your own way, the historic Līgatnes Papīrfabrika offers guided tours. They cover the history of the factory, paper production and the development of the Līgatne settlement around the factory. The tours begin at the main gate at Pilsoņu iela 1 in Līgatne. This fixed starting point is particularly relevant when choosing your accommodation if a visit to the factory is one of the central plans for your trip.

Nature Trails, Ravines and Native Wildlife

The Līgatne Nature Trails in Gauja National Park provide a clear contrast to the industrial culture. They were established in 1975 to introduce visitors to nature, the wild mammal species living in Latvia, natural diversity and the need to protect it. Along the banks of the Gauja, the paths lead through a forested area criss-crossed by ravines and include more than 5 km of trails.

On the Nature Trails, you can observe wild animals and birds native to Latvia. This makes it possible to add variety to a stay in Līgatne: one day can be devoted to the paper mill and its buildings, and another to the forested area and wildlife observation. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth defining your personal priorities: should the trip focus primarily on cultural history, experiencing nature or a combination of both?

Bunkers and Unusual Insights

Another special attraction is the Padomju Slepenais bunkurs. It was built in the 1980s for the political and state leadership elite to govern the country in the event of a nuclear war. The fully equipped bunker is located 9 m underground and covers an area of 2,000 m². The site thus offers an insight into a completely different chapter of history from that of the paper mill.

The reality game “Objekts X” is also offered in the bunker. Anyone who would like to solve puzzles together and experience an unusual historical setting can plan this visit as a focus of their trip. In addition, a tasting at Līgatnes vīna darītava offers the opportunity to sample various drinks together with local cow’s cheese.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans?

For travel planning, Līgatne offers an especially appealing thematic combination: a paper mill, historic living and working environments, a bunker, forest trails and wildlife observation. Choose your accommodation based on which of these experiences should shape your stay and how much room you want to give to different interests. In this way, the search for accommodation is guided by the specific discoveries you want to make in Līgatne.
