Koknese combines impressive cultural history with a river landscape and varied paths. The medieval castle ruins, Koknese Park, Likteņdārzs and several audio and experience routes offer different possibilities for a stay.

Castle Ruins and Historical Sites

Koknese Castle was one of the largest and most significant medieval castles in Latvia. An audio guide at the castle ruins tells of the site’s former grandeur. At the ruins of Kokneses Jaunā pils, you can also see foundation walls overgrown with trees. A QR code there provides access to a model of the New Castle, a virtual reality application, historical photographs and an audio guide.

The “Galastacija Koknese” route includes more than 20 objects and attractions in Koknese Park and its surroundings. Kokneses muižas ansamblis also offers historical points of interest: the ensemble includes the estate manager’s house and a fieldstone barn. An ornamental garden adds to the visit; the plants are labelled with Latvian and Latin names. The writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis lived here from 1885 to 1887.

Riverside Paths, Parkland and Views

The Koknese Nature Trail is 5.65 km long, runs through Koknese Park and follows the banks of the Pērse and Daugava. Take this distance into account when planning your day. The trail is popular with families with children, people seeking relaxation, those with an active lifestyle and cycling tourists. Native and foreign tree species as well as a wide variety of rare wildflowers grow in the park. Koknese Park was established in 1900 at the confluence of the Pērse and the Daugava.

Likteņdārzs brings together outstanding environmental architecture, the nature of the Koknese peninsula and the beauty of the Daugava. An observation terrace offers views of the river and the church of Koknese. Next to the Kokneses Evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca stands a bench overlooking the Daugava and Likteņdārzs. The church tower can be climbed for a donation. The church is also associated with Ernsts Johans Gliks, who served as its pastor.

Walks, Cycling Route and Boat Trips

The “Ne tik senās Kokneses pēdās” audio guide follows a route of just under three kilometres and presents the stories of 19 locations. The walk begins at the Koknese railway station building and ends at the intersection of Blaumaņa and Zemeņu streets. This makes it possible to explore Koknese along a set urban route as well, rather than only through the park and riverside landscape.

Those wishing to discover Koknese by bicycle can choose the “Daugavas ielejas velomaršruts” route. It passes through Koknese and ends at Likteņdārzs. The final section follows a naturally worn, scenic path with wooden bridges over ravines. The boats “Vīgante” and “Sēlis” offer a different perspective: they provide trips with commentary from the captain, travelling from the Koknese castle ruins along the Pērse River to Likteņdārzs. A one-hour trip also includes the Pērse River and the Lutheran church. At the landing stage near the castle ruins, you can view the site from the water.

Special Details for Trip Planning

A reconstruction of the Pērse waterfall is located in the pond in Koknese Park and is illuminated in the evening and at night. The “Roadgames Koknesē” game includes seven different types of tasks and complements classic walking tours with a playful way of exploring.

When looking for accommodation in Koknese, it is worth considering your preferred travel rhythm: the nature trail, historical walking tours, cycling route, boat trips and cultural sites each appeal to different interests. This allows you to choose a holiday apartment based on which of these experiences you want to shape your trip, without limiting yourself to just one way of exploring.
