Discover Ragaciems: Coast, Fishing and Trails
Accommodation in Ragaciems
Ragaciems combines coastal scenery, fishing history and active exploration on the Gulf of Riga. A stay here can take many different directions: you can get to know the official Ragaciema pludmale beach, discover traces of the local fishing craft, plan a section of the Jūrtaka Coastal Hiking Route or choose regional products at the fish market. This makes the village an interesting base for planning a holiday that brings together nature, culture and individually planned day trips.
Coast, Beach and Lighthouse
The Ragaciems Cape is a characteristic feature of the landscape. It is a promontory on the western shore of the Gulf of Riga and ends several hundred metres offshore in a shallow, rocky underwater sandbank. Those interested in the coast will also find the official “Ragaciema pludmale” beach in Ragaciems, at the end of Zvejnieku iela. It has a changing room, an information board and two toilets, one of which is accessible to people with reduced mobility. SUP boards can also be rented at the beach.
A distinctive coastal feature is the Ragaciema bāka lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1960 as a red rectangle on a lattice tower. Together with the cape and the beach, it provides a specific reason to experience the coastal landscape not merely as a backdrop, but as a sequence of different places to visit.
Fishing Traditions and Regional Products
At Ragaciema Sedums, several traditional net huts have been restored by descendants of local fishermen. They preserve the history of the fishing craft and commemorate their ancestors. Ragaciema Sedums received the “Latviskais mantojums” designation in 2015. For travellers who enjoy getting to know a place through its traditions, this creates a cultural focal point beyond simply viewing the landscape.
The fish market Zivju tirdziņš is also part of the local character. It sells fish caught in the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. Bread, honey, fruit and vegetables from farms in the surrounding area and further afield are also usually available.
Routes for Different Day Plans
Stage 21 of the Jūrtaka Coastal Hiking Route begins on the beach by the Ragaciema bāka lighthouse and ends at Dubulti Beach. The first third of this stage runs through Ķemeri National Park. The route thus offers a longer coastal hike, while the beach, lighthouse and fishing sites can also serve as individual, shorter activities for a varied day.
Another historic route connection is the Gausā jūdze between Ragaciems and Klapkalnciems. It is approximately 7 km long and was once travelled on foot or on horseback. This route makes the regional connection tangible in an illustrative way. Depending on your interests, you can therefore put together days in Ragaciems featuring coastal activities, nature experiences, culture and regional food. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth deciding on your preferred pace first: are the beach and SUP activities the main focus, are you more interested in fishing and the market, or should a longer hike shape the day?
