Engure combines a distinctive coastal landscape with fishing, seafaring and a surprisingly rich local history. The beach of Engure, with its grey dune, is particularly characteristic. This rare type of coastal dune occurs only in small areas of Latvia and gives the town a unique landscape. Anyone planning a trip that brings together the sea, culture and active pursuits will find several different ways to plan their days here.

Coast, Harbour and Water Activities

The harbour of Engure is both a fishing harbour and a yacht harbour. From there, several-hour trips out to sea are possible on the yacht Mahindra. Excursions are also offered during which you can watch sunsets from the sea. This makes it possible to experience Engure’s maritime character not only from the shore, but also from a different perspective.

For active days, the “Vējā” water sports centre offers kitesurfing, as well as the hire of SUP boards, bicycles, beach tennis equipment and volleyball equipment. “Pērle rada” has a shop run by craftspeople and artists; in summer, SUP board hire is also available there. Families and groups can therefore combine different interests without limiting their stay to a single type of holiday.

History and Culture in Engure

One of the notable historical sites is Marijas kalns, also known as Engures pilskalns, Baznīcas kalns and Māras kalns. It lies on a former course of the Engure near its mouth into the sea and is designated a state-protected archaeological monument of national importance. The different names reflect the long-standing cultural influence that has shaped this site.

Zušuciema Park was opened in 2018 as a cultural and historical site for environmental education. It presents the traditional activities of Engure’s inhabitants, which were connected with fishing and seafaring. Engure Saieta nams houses a tourist information centre, an exhibition hall and a historical exhibition. “JŪRAS STĀSTI” offers another perspective on the town’s history: it invites visitors to learn the stories of a seafaring and fishing family connected with Engure across five generations.

Engure’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is also notable for its cultural and historical significance. It is one of the rare wooden churches that was not converted into a stone church. The first records of the church date from 1567. Anyone interested in regional architectural history, fishing traditions and the development of a coastal town can explore these subjects in Engure from several different perspectives.

Orientation for Planning Your Trip

The “APKĀRT ENGUREI” hiking trail is marked in the forest with white-yellow-white markings and in the villages with stickers. This clear route guidance can be helpful when planning an active day. Another easily described landmark is the Engure Lighthouse. It was built as a lattice tower in 1954, is 19 metres high and has a focal height of 26 metres. Its range is 15 nautical miles.

Excursions at the “BŪDA” café are also among the possible elements of a trip; they are available by prior arrangement. This allows you to decide before arriving whether you would like to focus more on water, outdoor activities, local history or maritime stories.

The Right Accommodation for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Engure, it is worth deciding what kind of daily rhythm you want. Someone who wants to focus on the grey dune, the beach and the activities around the harbour will plan differently from someone primarily interested in the wooden church, archaeological monument, exhibitions and the history of seafaring. Accommodation in Engure can serve as a base for a customised trip in which active and more relaxed activities alternate.

This range of options is particularly appealing to families with different interests: kitesurfing, SUP, bicycles and marked trails are complemented by cultural and historical sites and storytelling experiences. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider which of these themes are important for your trip, and use Engure as a practical starting point for further planning.
