Burtnieki combines a manor landscape steeped in history with Lake Burtnieks, nature trails and special opportunities to explore the surrounding area from the water. Those planning a trip with nature, culture and varied ideas for day trips will find a range of experiences here: from walking through a historic park and observing wildlife from lookout towers to taking a boat tour on the Made Marija.

Manor, Park and Historical Traces

Burtnieki Manor Castle was built in the 17th century on the foundations of a destroyed Order castle. The manor park combines elements of the Italian Renaissance with features of a landscape garden and was designed in the eclectic style of the 19th century. This creates a cultural focal point that can be easily combined with exploring the surrounding landscape, without having to plan the two interests separately.

Burtnieki Church is also part of the history of the area. After a fire in 1654, it was completely restored. In the vicinity of Lake Burtnieks, there is also a chapel built in the Classical style and a cemetery gate. Both are designated as architectural monuments of national significance. Those interested in architectural history and historical evidence can plan these places as a separate discovery alongside the manor.

Vīsraga: Nature Trail between Park and Lake

The Vīsraga nature trail is located in the Burtnieka ezera pļavas nature reserve and begins at the Silver Gate of Burtnieki Manor Park. From there, it leads through the park to Lake Burtnieks and the flood meadows of the Ēķinupe. Along the way, the trail passes the ruins of a Livonian Order castle. A lookout tower on the nature trail offers views across the flood meadows and the southeastern shore of the lake.

This changing landscape is particularly interesting when planning a day: historic park features, ruins, wet meadows and lakeshore all form part of the same route, without this implying any specific walking time or level of difficulty. Lake Burtnieks is the fourth-largest lake in Latvia. Around the lake are sandstone outcrops on the steep shore, formed by wave erosion and the only outcrops of their kind in Latvia.

Water Experiences and Nature Observation

The Made Marija offers one-hour trips with an audio guide or two-hour trips with commentary by a guide, background music and photo opportunities. The boat tours depart from the boat canal in the centre of Burtnieki or from Matīši Beach in Burtnieki. This allows you to choose between a shorter trip accompanied by an audio guide and a longer tour with additional commentary.

Another perspective can be enjoyed from the Silzemnieku nature observation tower on the northeastern side of Lake Burtnieks. From there, you can observe the lake landscape and various bird species. Around 200 horses are kept at Burtnieki Stud Farm. Together with the lake, flood meadows and viewpoints, this creates a destination where active exploration and nature observation offer different focuses.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Plans?

When choosing your accommodation, you can first consider which focus should shape your days. If you want to explore the manor, park and historic buildings, Burtnieki’s cultural heritage takes centre stage. For days in nature, consider Vīsraga, the lakeshore, lookout towers and birdwatching. Those planning a boat trip can include the two mentioned departure points and the desired duration of the trip in their travel plans. This makes it possible to choose a holiday apartment or holiday home in Burtnieki according to your preferred daily rhythm and personal balance of water, nature and history.
