Cildi: Nature, Water and Recorded History
Cildi combines a place name documented for centuries with themes of nature and culture. The name Cildi and the settlement have been documented since the 13th century; in 1253, the place was referred to as “Cildes ciems”. Those planning a trip here can therefore combine different interests: protected woodlands, bird species, water activities and historical references to life in the region.
Nature in Kazdanga Park
A prominent natural attraction is Kazdanga Park. It is a protected dendrological planting in Kazdanga Parish. A total of 47 different woody plant taxa occur there, along with seven specially protected species. Today, more than 150 bird species find a habitat in Kazdanga Park. For those interested in nature, this provides a specific focus for planning a trip: the diversity of woody plants and the number of bird species make the park a place where botanical and ornithological interests meet.
If you are travelling with different age groups, you can consciously give nature and culture different emphasis. The park represents plants and habitats, while the Kazdanga Museum focuses more strongly on cultural history. The museum offers guided tours through the park and creative workshops in the manor house. It also presents the history of the family of Barons Manteifel–Scēge, the establishment and almost 80 years of activity of the Kazdanga agricultural technical school, the history of the Kazdanga pharmacy and an extensive exhibition of the Boja Forest Museum.
Hiking Trail and Water Activity
There is also a clearly named route section for a more active day plan. The Mežtaka long-distance hiking trail runs for 0.7 km along Kazdanga–Cildi Road (V1200).
At Lake Dzirnezer, water bicycles, meaning catamarans, are available for hire. Anyone looking for an activity on the water can take this option into account when planning their trip.
Historical References to Cildi and Valtaiķi Parish
The local history can also be explored through educational and biographical history. Until 1855, the writer Juris Māters studied at the Cildi parish school under the teacher Vilis Ulpe. In the mid-19th century, Cildi had a parish school. These two references show different aspects of the past: one concerns the education of a specific person, while the other concerns the existence of a local school.
The Cildi private estate (Zilden) in Valtaiķi Parish is recorded in revision lists from 1811, 1816, 1834 and 1850, as well as in their supplements. This entry refers to Valtaiķi Parish and should be considered separately from the previously mentioned references to the parish school in Cildi.
The Right Holiday Apartment for Planning Your Trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Cildi, you can therefore first decide what kind of stay you want. Those wishing to combine different interests can plan their days around their own priorities and choose accommodation that suits their personal travel rhythm. This keeps the trip planning flexible without limiting it to a single theme.
This results not in a rigid list of must-see destinations, but in trip planning based on your own interests. Accommodation in Cildi can serve as the starting point for a stay in which you combine historical questions, nature observation and an activity on the water in different ways.
