Vicenza combines extraordinary architecture with museums, pilgrimage history and green excursion destinations. The city and the Palladian villas of the Veneto form a serial UNESCO World Heritage Site: this includes Vicenza and 24 Palladian villas scattered throughout the Veneto. In the city, Palladio’s palaces were integrated into the medieval urban fabric. This created picturesque ensembles and continuous street façades in which Venetian Gothic meets Palladio’s structured classicism. Vicenza preserves numerous original buildings by Palladio and is therefore regarded as a uniquely well-preserved example of a comprehensive humanist concept with a lively interpretation of antiquity.

The Basilica Palladiana features Palladio’s Serliana loggia, which encloses the medieval Palazzo della Ragione; since 1994, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vicenza. Its site was once home to the „Palatium vetus“, the first seat of the city administration and magistrate. The terrace on the second upper floor is a monumental viewpoint. From there, the 360-degree view extends across the old town, the medieval rooftops, the Piazza dei Signori below and the natural profile of the Colli Berici.

The Teatro Olimpico was Andrea Palladio’s final work and is considered the oldest covered theater in the world. The Accademia Olimpica commissioned it in February 1580. It was completed five years later and solemnly inaugurated on March 3, 1585, with Sophocles’ „Oedipus Rex“. As of August 10, 2026, opening hours are listed as 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday.

Palazzo Chiericati was designed by Andrea Palladio for Girolamo Chiericati in 1550 and has been the historic home of Vicenza’s Museo Civico since 1855. The museum preserves and displays more than 35,000 works of painting, sculpture, graphic art and applied art dating from the 13th to the 20th century. The Basilica Palladiana is also home to the Museo del Gioiello, a permanent museum covering 410 square meters. It was the first museum in Italy devoted exclusively to jewelry and is one of only a few museums of its kind worldwide. The exhibition „GIOIELLO – ITALIA“ 2025–2027 comprises six rooms and eleven thematic areas; its chronological development spans from the 5th century BC to the 21st century.

The villas, too, showcase Palladio’s architecture in different forms of expression. The Villa Almerico Capra Valmarana is known as „La Rotonda“ and has a central square plan, four identical façades with six-columned pronaoi and grand staircases, as well as a central dome. Areas of particular cultural interest include the garden surrounding the villa, the grand staircases and the pronaoi. The Palazzina and Foresteria of Villa Valmarana ai Nani contain frescoes by the Tiepolo artists. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, visitors can walk through the Bosco from the parking lot on Via della Rotonda and continue their visit in the Foresteria and the Palazzina.

Monte Berico, sacred art and special collections

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Monte Berico was established on the hill south of the city of Vicenza following two Marian apparitions, on March 7, 1426, and August 1, 1428. From the beginning, it was a pilgrimage destination. In 1578, Andrea Palladio enlarged the sanctuary with a large square nave. The Museo d’arte sacra di Monte Berico preserves and interprets thousands of testimonies to popular religious devotion from Vicenza, the Veneto and Lombardy, dating from the 14th century to the present day. Six thematic areas cover the history of the sanctuary, liturgical furnishings, devotion to the Addolorata, votive offerings and other donations, the iconography of the Servite Order, and a collection of post-Byzantine icons.

The Gothic interior of the Chiesa di Santa Corona houses Giovanni Bellini’s „Baptism of Christ“ and Paolo Veronese’s „Adoration of the Magi“. The Palladio Museum is a ten-minute walk from Vicenza railway station. This makes it possible to plan a cultural stay around a specific starting point without separating the architectural sights from the religious and art-historical themes.

Green spaces and nature observation in Vicenza

The natural history section of the Museo Naturalistico-Archeologico explains the environmental characteristics of the area, particularly the Colli Berici, including the endemic plant and animal species found there. The archaeological section preserves and displays evidence of the ancient history of the Vicenza area, from prehistory to the period of the Lombards. In Parco Querini are the banks of the Bacchiglione River, its tributary Astichello and a section of the Venetian city wall along Viale Rodolfi. The park also includes a pond with an island crowned by a small temple, a grove and a fitness trail.

Parco della Pace offers opportunities for wildlife observation: among other species, visitors can observe herons, egrets, deer, frogs and fish. Five entrances for pedestrians and cyclists are easily accessible via the city’s cycle network. For an active day out, there is also a recommended GPX hike from the historic center to Monte Berico. The Vicenza Gold Card is valid for twelve days from the date of issue and allows one visit to each participating site.
