The oldest part of Pai lies on the slopes of Monte Baldo, while Pai di Sotto is on the lakeshore near the 12th-century Romanesque Church of San Gregorio. This brings together mountain terrain, lakeshore and different local landscapes in Pai. Woodlands of European hop-hornbeam, downy oak, holm oak and ash surround the village.

Pai between Monte Baldo and the lake

Near Pai di Sopra, the Tanella Cave lies in the woods on the slopes of Monte Baldo. The Church of San Marco opens onto a panoramic terrace overlooking Lake Garda. In Pai di Sotto, the Church of San Gregorio Magno stands in the cemetery in a scenic location. The cemetery and the Oratorio di San Gregorio can be reached on foot from Pai di Sotto via Via Giosuè Carducci.

Hiking trails and the Ponte Tibetano

Sentiero 31 runs from Cassone to Pai di Sopra and is rated E. Sentiero 39 leads from Località Punta Piàghen di Pai to San Zeno di Montagna and is rated T. One hiking route begins in Pai di Sopra on Sentiero 38, reaches the Ponte Tibetano via Sentieri 39 and 41, and returns to the car park in Pai di Sopra after crossing the bridge. The different routes provide a concrete basis if you would like to plan active days with different focuses.

The Ponte Tibetano della Val Vanzana was built in 2019. It is 34.7 metres long and lies 42 metres above the stream below. From the entrance to Pai di Sopra, an uphill path leads to this bridge in approximately 20 to 25 minutes on foot.

Frescoes, churches and traces of local life

The apse of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Marco contains fragments of Late Gothic frescoes dating from the late 14th to the early 15th century. Pai di Sopra also preserves some remains of the fortifications of a castle dismantled by Barbarossa. In the lanes of the historic centre of Pai di Sopra, painted wayside shrines point to local artistic traditions.

A painted wayside shrine on Via dell’Angelo was commissioned by a miner and painted by Eugenio Vangelista. The historic washhouse in Pai di Sopra is locally called “fontana” and has a Verona marble washing surface. The Calchera is an old lime kiln used to produce lime. From Piazza San Marco, a woodland path along Via Monte Baldo leads to the Calchera in just a few minutes.
