Grezzana between nature and culture

Grezzana is a destination for travellers who want to combine natural landscapes, cultural history and outdoor activities. Rocky landscapes and rare traces

In the Vajo del Paradiso, layers of "Rosso ammonitico" that have undergone varying degrees of erosion have formed high rock ledges. Rocky paths run at their foot, and caves and rock shelters also open up there. Rare rock paintings have been preserved on the rock faces, although their classification is difficult. They range from the Neolithic period to protohistoric times, or possibly to early Christian or early medieval religious depictions.

Historic sites in Grezzana

The garden of Villa Arvedi was created as an elegant and understated embellishment of the building erected in 1650 by the architect and sculptor G.B. Bianchi. The villa stands on a lawn terrace and overlooks the parterre, whose sophisticated patterns form a double fan; the design is considered unique in Italy. Contrada Bellori has largely preserved its characteristic architectural features. Its landmark is the Mulino di Bellori, a two-wheel water mill built around the 16th century that remained in operation until 1956.

The complex now known as Torre del Falasco took on an orderly form at the beginning of the 12th century, when the area was granted as a fief to the Turrisendi family, which additionally fortified the naturally protected site. Riparo Tagliente is considered one of the significant prehistoric archaeological sites at European level and demonstrates that Lessinia has been inhabited since ancient times.

Trip-planning information

The path to Torre del Falasco crosses private property; the site is therefore currently not open to the public. The tower can be seen from a distance among the rocks from the bypass road between Grezzana and Stallavanea, heading towards Lessinia. Riparo Tagliente is accessible only during the excavation campaign conducted by the Università di Ferrara, usually in late September or early October.

The circular trail „Boschi e antiche località sulle colline di Grezzana“ leads from Grezzana (168 m) via Orè (225 m), Bivio Falasco (295 m), Case Vecchie (485 m) and Coatte (345 m) back to Grezzana (168 m). FEET is a project for enhancing hiking and cycling trails in the Grezzana area, thereby highlighting both forms of travel.

The surrounding area of Grezzana includes Castle Saint Pietro as a castle, the Teatro romano di Verona as an ancient site and museum, and the Museo Africano as a museum. Also nearby are the Parco delle Cascate as a waterfall, as well as Arco della Costa, Porta Borsari and Porta Vescovo, each described as a natural arch.
