Palude del Busatello: nature and protected areas

The Palude del Busatello lies within the Special Area of Conservation IT3210013, which is also designated as a Special Protection Area. It is one of the last Italian sites of cicuta acquatica. The Paludi di Ostiglia e del Busatello wetland complex covers 81 hectares, lies in Lombardy and Veneto in the municipalities of Ostiglia (MN) and Gazzo Veronese (VR), and is recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. More than 200 bird species, including 54 breeding species, find refuge there. By the water, wetland and river course meet as distinct landscape areas.

Paths along the Tione and dates at the Oasi

Casa del Turbine, also known as Casa dell'Angela, serves as the starting point for the route into the Palude del Busatello. An easy trekking trail leads from Casa del Turbine along the Tione to its confluence with the Tartaro. Casa del Turbine is also the venue each year on 25 April for the opening of the season of guided visits to the Oasi.

Archaeology, Roman history and sacred history

The Museo Archeologico di Gazzo Veronese is located in Villa Parolin Poggiani and provides insights into local life in the Neolithic period and Roman times. Gazzo Veronese is also home to Dosso del Pol, a Palaeo-Venetian necropolis dating from the 6th to the 5th century BC. For those interested in culture, the area's historical sequence extends from the Neolithic period through the Palaeo-Venetian necropolis to Roman times.

During Roman times, Gazzo was located on the Via Claudia Augusta. The route led from Ostiglia across the Tartaro River to Verona. On the banks of the Tione at San Pietro in Valle, a hamlet of Gazzo Veronese, stands the church of San Pietro in Monastero. It is also known as San Pietro in Valle.

Regional nativity tradition

Every year, Gazzo Veronese takes part in the regional initiative La Strada dei Presepi. An annual nativity scene exhibition is held in Villa Parolin Poggiani in Gazzo.
