Forte Ceraino was built by the Austrians between 1850 and 1851 as a fortress. It was initially named Forte Hlawaty. After modernization by the Italian army in 1884, it was given the name Forte di Ceraino. Forte Ceraino is located at 236 meters above sea level on a plateau above the valley of the Adige River.

The Chiusa di Ceraino and the landscape along the Adige

The Chiusa di Ceraino lies where the Val d’Adige ends at the level of Ceraino. Its gorge was carved into the rock by water erosion after the glaciers retreated. The circular Girovagando per Volargne route also leads to the banks of the Adige, reaching a section with a sandy beach there.

Hiking trails with varied route landscapes

The circular Girovagando per Volargne route starts at the church of Ceraino. Along its course, it reaches the sandy beach on the Adige and, on the way back to Ceraino, follows a short unpaved path through vineyards. Route 2 Villa del Bene–Ceraino leads from Villa del Bene along an old paved path to the Adige River, through the Chiusa canyon and onward to Ceraino. The Girovagando per Volargne route features a church, riverbank and vineyards along its course; Route 2 leads via Villa del Bene, the Adige River and the Chiusa canyon to Ceraino.

Sentiero n. 240 begins near the church of Ceraino at a small parking area beside the road. After 1.5 kilometers, it reaches Forte Ceraino via an unpaved road with several hairpin bends. From Forte Ceraino, Sentiero n. 240 continues to Forte di Monte.

Bike tour and destinations in the surrounding area

The Percorso in bici Ceraino is 16.65 kilometers long. The Falesia Mitria ruins are also located in the immediate vicinity of Ceraino. The surrounding area is home to the Museo dell’olio museum, Castello Scaligero castle, the Parco delle Cascate waterfall, Parco Natura Viva zoo, the Padri Redentoristi monastery, and the peaks of Punta di Naole and Corno d’Aquilio.
