Avesa combines a historic borgo with sacred art, traditional workplaces and a distinctive tuff landscape. Historic streets, churches, a garden with water basins, quarries and a path through Borago and Vajo Galina shape the specific character of the local scenery.

The characteristic streets of the historic borgo – Via Premuda, Via Gazzo, Via Indentro and Via Camaldola – have largely preserved their architectural and landscape character. Avesa still has several “lissiare”, rooms where laundry was boiled, as well as some preserved mills. There are also washing facilities for the “brele”, laundry piled up for rinsing, and for the “piera”, on which laundry was soaped and beaten. The borgo thus brings together the preserved character of its streets and tangible workplaces from its former laundry and milling activities.

Churches, frescoes and a special garden

San Martino Vescovo in Avesa was a collegiate church by 1225 at the latest. The original church at Molino Vecchio was demolished during the major levelling carried out in 1517; the present church was built on the same site.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Camaldoli was built by Camaldolese monks in the early years of the 13th century. It preserves extensive fragments of frescoes attributed to the 16th century. In the garden of Villa del Bene Scopoli, a monumental elliptical water basin preserves a stone balustrade, water features and grottoes. The two churches bring together different architectural and decorative elements: at San Martino Vescovo, the collegiate church and the present church building at Molino Vecchio; at Santa Maria di Camaldoli, the monastic foundation and the fresco fragments.

Quarries and paths through the landscape

The Latomìe del Monte Ongarine in Avesa are large tuff quarries of “pietra gallina”, worked out of the mountain through intensive extraction since antiquity. The Sentiero n. 4 Progno Borago - Vajo Galina begins north of Avesa behind the Paiola bridge, passes through Borago and then continues into Vajo Galina. Those planning the route as a day in the landscape should use the starting point behind the Paiola bridge as their reference and follow the route through Borago and on into Vajo Galina.
