At the Conca di Portegrandi, the lock gates commemorate a specific construction phase: they were built between 1682 and 1684.

The ancient city of Altinum was located in the present-day village of Altino. Altino was one of the most important ports in the northern Adriatic. The city included a forum with a basilica for public functions, temples and numerous emporia, meaning trading centres of that period. The name Domus della Pantera derives from a black-and-white mosaic in the atrium depicting an animal drinking.
