Holiday apartment in Pontelongo: discover river history and sugar tradition
The place name was first documented in 1097; the bridge, mill and sugar factory tell of different chapters in the history of the town. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Pontelongo, you can combine river history, architecture, art, museums and sugar tradition here.
Historical traces along the Bacchiglione
The historic stone bridge of Pontelongo had three arches. The central arch was significantly higher and wider than the other two to allow boats to pass. On 17 September 1882, the bridge was destroyed by flooding of the Bacchiglione. The mill is also part of the town’s river history: it has been documented since at least 1875, was founded by Oreste Centanin and used steam power for production. The river served as a transport route. From the left bank of the Bacchiglione, the mill continues to shape Pontelongo’s skyline. A navigable route via Padua, Battaglia, Bovolenta and Pontelongo connects the Euganean Hills with the lagoon near Chioggia.
Architecture, art and local history
The former Casa del Fascio was built in 1938 and is considered one of the rare examples of Futurist architecture in Veneto’s architectural landscape. The building was partially accessible for events; it also has a ramp for easier access. Villa Foscarini Erizzo provides an older architectural accent; it was probably built in the second half of the 16th century as a summer residence for the Venetian Foscarini da San Stae family. More contemporary in appearance is the mural by Tony Gallo, created in 2020 on a facade of the G. Leopardi middle school. In 2022, Mr Zatti donated the work “Dante pensante” to the municipal administration of Pontelongo.
Museum, church interior and outdoor activities
The GeSTA Museum (Guerra e Saccisica Testimonianze Avvenimenti) opened in April 2014. In its first phase, it focused on the First World War and the soldiers of the Saccisica. The materials are presented mainly in digital form; there are also display cases containing wartime objects, reproductions of documents about soldiers and historical uniforms. The Church of San Geminiano di Terranova, a district of Pontelongo, is also part of the town’s history. Following the straightening of the river course in 1859, it lies on the right bank. The two parts of the area around San Geminiano di Terranova are connected by a footbridge. The Parco della Rimembranza was inaugurated in 1927. The Area attrezzata Sport e Salute was designed for physical activity, outdoor recreation and general well-being.
Pontelongo as the “Paese dello Zucchero”
Pontelongo’s sugar factory was built on 26 June 1910 in a bend of the Bacchiglione. This tradition is also reflected in the name “Paese dello Zucchero” (“Sugar Town”), which the municipal administration gave Pontelongo in 2006. The Festival della Dolcezza includes the last Sunday in November, the first Sunday in December and the patronal festival of Sant’Andrea, celebrated on 30 November. Activities offered over the years around Pontelongo’s sugar tradition have included train rides to the sugar factory, public demonstrations of sugar sculptures and workshops for young pastry chefs.
