Holiday apartment in Ghetto: Hiking, culture and wine in Teolo

Ghetto di Teolo is considered a group of houses at the eastern foot of Monteseo de Piantea. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Ghetto will find a starting point here for very different kinds of holiday days: forest paths and mountain landscapes meet religious buildings, art, wine and regional cuisine.

Forest landscape at Monte Grande

The entire municipal area of Teolo lies within the Parco Regionale dei Colli Euganei. At Passo Fiorine, the area comprises around 2 hectares of meadows and 3 hectares of chestnut forest with numerous oaks and individual wild cherry trees. The Sentiero del Monte Grande is 4,200 metres long and is considered manageable without particular difficulty. Its route leads over the mountain ridge and then along the southern slope. Downy oaks, manna ash, rockroses, tree heather and strawberry trees grow there.

The forest path to Ghetto di Teolo also reveals nature throughout the seasons. Forest flowers can be found there in spring, and mushrooms in autumn. In the past, the rare wild orchid Epipactis microphylla was also recorded along this path. A pair of peregrine falcons breeds every year at Rocca Pendice; this contributed significantly to the park being designated as a Special Protection Area of the Natura 2000 network.

Culture and special places

The existence of the Santuario della Madonna del Monte has been documented since 1253. The sanctuary preserves a 14th-century statue of the Virgin Mary and includes a small Benedictine monastery dependent on the Abbazia di Praglia. The Oratorio di S. Antonio Abate is a Romanesque building from the 14th century and can be reached via an easy path from Passo Fiorine.

Another cultural highlight is the Museo d'arte contemporanea Dino Formaggio. It displays paintings and sculptures from the late 19th century to the present day, comprises around 200 works and is located in the Palazzetto dei Vicari in Teolo. Rocca Pendice complements this selection with a natural rock face of towering trachyte traditionally used for sport climbing.

Hiking and cycling

The Monte Grande e Monte della Madonna hiking route leads from Teolo towards Ghetto, turns left into the forest there and climbs to Passo Le Fiorine. It is around 13 kilometres long, involves approximately 500 metres of ascent and descent, and takes about five hours without breaks. A forest path reaches Ghetto di Teolo after descending from the southern slope of Monte Fiorine and from Monteseo de Piantea via Resoro.

For cyclists, the singletrack known as “Vietnam” is a distinctive section: it leads downhill through the forest to Via Chiesa in the Località Ghetto di Teolo. The trail is steep and may require riders to dismount. The Salita al Monte Grande cycling tour reaches Ghetto di Teolo via this singletrack. As a longer option, the 63-kilometre panoramic Anello dei Colli Euganei passes through the Teolo area. Numerous hikes on CAI trails expand the selection.

Orientation and regional specialities

The Area Pubblica “Lieta Carraresi” at Passo Fiorine has a large car park, an accessible access ramp and several rest areas for people with disabilities. Via Ghetto is reached from the road to Santuario Monte Madonna: after around 300 metres, turn left at the junction onto a road that is restricted to local residents. This information is intended to help with practical orientation around the area.

Wineries in Teolo offer tours of their premises, walks through the vineyards and wine tastings. Teolo's local cuisine includes handmade gnocchi and schissotto, a rustic bread. This makes it possible to choose accommodation according to the desired holiday rhythm: active hiking days, a cycling tour, culture at Monte Madonna or enjoyable hours among vineyards and regional dishes.
