Holiday apartment in Conche: Lagoon, Casoni and History
Conche combines natural landscapes and cultural memory in an unusual way. The Valle Millecampi is a 1,608-hectare wetland and lagoon landscape. At the same time, churches, parish history and the characteristic Casoni point to a distinctive local tradition.
Holiday apartment in Conche between lagoon and cultural heritage
The Valle Millecampi has been included in the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “Venice and its Lagoon”. Its landscape includes small freshwater inflows from the Scirocchetto Canal and the Fogolana pumping station in the hamlet of Conche. The character of the area is particularly evident on walks through the open Valle Millecampi: the paths lead between winding freshwater channels, brackish-water areas and extensive salt marshes that are regularly flooded during high tide.
From Padua, the route follows State Road 516 Padua–Chioggia through Legnaro, Piove di Sacco and Codevigo to kilometre 99. There, turn left onto the road to the hamlet of Fogolana di Conche.
Church history spanning several eras
Conche’s ecclesiastical history dates back a long way. The document dated 15 March 1107 is regarded as the founding charter of the parish of Conche. More than five centuries of parish history lie between the founding charter of 1107 and the rebuilding in 1645. The former church in Conche was rebuilt in 1645 on the left bank embankment of the Brenta under the title Santa Maria della Neve. A new three-nave parish church in the Romanesque style was consecrated on 28 November 1953.
The parish of “Conche S. Maria della Neve” is also known as “S. Mariae ad Nives de Conchis”. Its address is Via Vallona 73, 35020 Codevigo PD, in the hamlet of Conche.
Casoni della Fogolana and Casone delle Sacche
The Casoni della Fogolana feature a distinctive architectural form typical of the lagoon landscape. Their floor plans are square or rectangular, and the walls are made of sun-dried bricks. They also have steeply pitched, reed-covered roofs with four roof slopes. In the Fogolana area of the municipality of Codevigo, there are four Casoni that recreate typical valley dwellings, as well as an adjacent green space.
Several routes lead to the Casone delle Sacche by car, bicycle or on foot. At the same time, the Casone delle Sacche has a connection to film history: it served as a film location for “La moglie del prete”, starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni.
Asparago di Conche and local tradition
In spring, trying the Asparago di Conche is recommended. The Festa dell’Asparago di Conche is also part of the local tradition. It is organised by the Gruppo culturale di Conche and the Cooperativa agricola prodotti ortofrutticoli (C.A.P.O.) di Conche.
