Discover Baone: Trails, History and Regional Culture

Baone begins with its landscape. The hills around the town offer peaceful, health-promoting walks in every season. In the varied surroundings, diverse landscapes and rock formations alternate with beautiful flora; occasional encounters with local wildlife add to the nature-watching experience. Trails, plants, rocks and traces of history stand side by side from the very beginning.

Trails, Rocks and Plants around Baone

On Sentiero del Monte Cecilia No. 8, the trail leads through a limestone meadow with yellow-flowering broom. The rare Ruta patavina also grows there, a plant species endemic to northeastern Italy and the Balkan Peninsula. This section of the trail therefore represents a landscape of plants and meadows, while the Carega del Diavolo later forms a rocky natural landmark.

Latite occurs on Monte Cecilia, an extrusive rock composed mainly of feldspars. In Parco delle Ginestre, you can observe the characteristic landscapes of the Euganean Hills. The same park also contains a Percorso Vita with exercise equipment and benches. There, the exercise equipment and benches complement observation of the hilly landscape with movement and breaks.

The Carega del Diavolo offers a distinct natural highlight. This striking rock formation resembles an imposing throne and lies near the ruins of the Santa Margherita monastery. Such unusual rock formations provide a clear point of orientation during a walk without reducing the landscape to a single viewpoint.

Historical Traces and Trails for Exploring

A side trail from Sentiero del Monte Cecilia leads to the ruins of the medieval castle of the da Baone family.

Via degli Eremi, Ruderi e Castelli is a themed trail that connects some of the most significant historical sites in the park. It is recommended for visits year-round. In Baone, a branch leading to castle ruins and a themed trail through the park therefore coexist as different types of routes.

A medieval predecessor of Villa Ca’ Barbaro, known as Casa merlata dei Macaruffi, has been documented since at least 1373. Villa Beatrice d’Este stands on Monte Gemola; Saint Beatrice I d’Este lived there from 1221 to 1226.

Following a reported miracle, the Chiesetta della Madonna delle Ave developed from an earlier defensive structure into a Marian sanctuary that attracted pilgrims for centuries.

Peas and an Annual Festival

Baone is known for the production and trade of peas. This regional identity is also reflected in the Festa dei Bisi. It was founded in 1999 on the initiative of the Pro Loco of Baone with the support of the Municipality of Baone and developed within a few years into the municipality’s most important event. In Baone, it is held every year at the end of May.
