Bettolle: Palio, Chianina and Cycling Routes
Bettolle combines a vibrant local history, rural culinary culture and extensive paths through the landscape. This gives you a destination with different ideas for each day: a traditional event leads to the historic centre, while cycling routes, museums, castles and mountains draw your attention beyond the town itself.
Palio and Chianina: Bettolle’s distinctive themes
During the Palio della Rivalsa di Bettolle, five pairs of bearers representing Bettolle’s contrade carry a wooden amphora on a litter over two complete laps through the town’s historic centre. The event reenacts an incident from the 16th century, when Ascanio della Cornia, lord of Castiglion del Lago, launched a military attack on Bettolle’s fortifications. Today’s Chianina breed is the result of a selection process begun in the last century on the cattle farms of the Fattorie Puccio and Passerini in Bettolle.
Cycling routes for active and culinary days
The Sentiero della Bonifica is a 62-kilometre cycling route along the Canale Maestro della Chiana between Arezzo and Chiusi. The route is particularly flat, shielded from traffic and equipped with numerous areas specifically designed for breaks. This provides a clearly defined route for relaxed tour planning, with the canal-side course and regular breaks setting the pace.
The Percorso del Gigante Bianco, by contrast, extends for 313 kilometres through the provinces of Arezzo and Siena. Along this route, visitors can visit farms that breed Chianina cattle and taste its authentic PGI-certified meat. The clearly different route lengths offer various scales for planning a trip: the focus can be on a single stretch or on a more comprehensive combination of landscape and regional agriculture.
Museums, castles and architecture in the surrounding area
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Fratticciola and the Museo della Tortura di Montepulciano are located in the area around Bettolle. In the wider region, you can also find Castello di Montecchio Vesponi, a castle, and Castello di Montelifrè, a castle ruin. The Real Fattoria di Bettolle is a villa in the Sinalunga hamlet of the same name in the province of Siena. Its farmhouses feature the architectural form typical of the Valdichiana, with a portico, staircase and loggia.
Mountains as a regional contrast
The wider regional surroundings of Bettolle include four mountains: Monte Castiglion Maggio, Alta San Egidio, Monte Castel Giudeo and Poggio del Sarto. Together with the museums, buildings and two routes, they broaden the view of a region where cultural impressions, agriculture and landscape appeal to different interests.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Bettolle, you can use your preferred type of day as a personal benchmark: the flat Sentiero della Bonifica, culinary discoveries along the Percorso del Gigante Bianco, the Palio and museums, or architecture and mountains in the wider area. In this way, Bettolle remains a versatile starting point for your own combination of activity, history and regional flavours.
