Historic Traces and Special Works of Art

The history of Il Castello Nuovo goes back to a clearly dated event: by 1379 at the latest, its keys had been handed over to the population. This date gives the historical connection to the town a tangible dimension, without requiring a detailed chronology.

Since 1999, the Museo del Paesaggio has been housed in a building dating from the late 19th century that was formerly used as a public slaughterhouse. Interactive multimedia applications there convey the history of agricultural landscapes and mezzadria, the system of agricultural sharecropping. In the same building, its former use as a slaughterhouse and the history of mezzadria come together.

The Chiesa dei Santi Giusto e Clemente was designed and built by the Sienese architect Agostino Fantastici between 1843 and 1846. The Chigi Saracini Chapel, dedicated to the Madonna del Rosario, contains a panel painting signed by Giovanni di Paolo in 1426, depicting the Madonna and Child with musical angels. The church combines a 19th-century building with a panel painting from 1426.

Architecture and Parkland

The Chiesa della Compagnia di Maria Santissima del Patrocinio e Oratorio di San Sebastiano has a neoclassical gabled façade. Its lower section is clad with travertine slabs, while the upper section is plastered.

The Parco di villa Chigi Saracini was laid out from 1834 onwards according to designs by Agostino Fantastici in the Romantic style, with an English landscape woodland. It also includes an Italian garden with low boxwood hedges and flower beds. The landscape woodland and Italian garden belong to the same complex.

San Gusmè has preserved parts of its original medieval walls and two original stone gates. The Parco Sculture del Chianti offers another approach to contemporary art: the permanent exhibition comprises installations and sculptures in an oak and holm oak forest.
