Santa Croce sull’Arno: Culture, Carnival and Flat Landscapes

Santa Croce sull’Arno lies on the right bank of the Arno. The area is completely flat and surrounded by hills. At the same time, the town is part of an industrial district associated with the production of leather, hides and shoes. This combination of flat landscapes, a riverside location and an economy shaped by craftsmanship gives Santa Croce sull’Arno a distinct character of its own.

Holiday apartment in Santa Croce sull’Arno between theatre and festive traditions

The Teatro Verdi is a small Italian theatre dating from the late 19th century. It opened on 8 May 1902 and has 312 seats. As the Teatro Comunale „G. Verdi“, it serves as a cultural, production and educational venue, as well as a meeting place for the citizens of Santa Croce sull’Arno and for audiences from a wider geographical area. For a holiday focused on culture, the theatre therefore offers a particularly direct connection to the town’s public life.

The annual Carnevale d’Autore offers a completely different form of shared experience. Visitors come to see the costumes made by the four organising groups. The santacrocese Carnevale d’Autore originated in 1928.

Churches, art and the history of tanning

The Museo della Conceria is located on the site of the former municipal slaughterhouses and the old „Lapi“ tannery. The site thus provides a direct link to the leather and tanning history that forms part of Santa Croce sull’Arno’s economic character. For your planning, it is also important to note that the Museo della Conceria is currently temporarily closed to the public.

Opened in 1991, the Centro di Attività Espressive Villa Pacchiani is a municipal cultural centre for contemporary art. The villa itself was built at the end of the 18th century and expanded with a second building section in the second half of the 19th century.

The churches also tell stories of different periods. The Church of San Rocco was built around 1650 on the remains of the former Madonna delle Grazie chapel. The Chiesa di Santa Cristiana was expanded at the beginning of the 18th century to accommodate the remains of Santa Cristiana. The ceiling of its central vault was decorated with a fresco by Anton Domenico Bamberini.
