Culture among churches, bridges and medieval traces
The history of the area is evident in several different places. Castelluccio was first mentioned in records in 1086 under the Latin name Castellum de Regnano. Castelluccio has been known and visited as an archaeological area with significant medieval remains since at least the 1980s. The ruins of the fortified site are located in a small olive grove on the grounds of the Fattoria di Pagnana. The Castello di Volognano also dates from the 11th century, and its walls enclose a fortified village.
The Ponte di Rignano is also known as the Ponte Mediceo and Ponte San Clemente and connects the two banks of the Arno near Rignano. It is considered the oldest bridge in the Valdarno. The Abbey of Santa Maria is located in Rosano, within the municipality of Rignano sull'Arno. It was founded in 780 and has always been home to a cloistered Benedictine community of women. The church contains a painted depiction of the Crucifixion dating from the 12th century, which was recently restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
The Pieve di San Leolino is probably one of the oldest Romanesque parish churches in the area around Florence. It contains a fragment of the fresco Madonna della Consolazione by Bicci di Lorenzo. Reservations are required for visits on weekdays; on Saturdays and Sundays, visits are scheduled during Masses. Villa Il Focardo is also associated with the massacre of members of the Einstein-Mazzetti family on 3 August 1944. The Einstein-Mazzetti family grave at the Cimitero della Badiuzza is visited as a place for remembrance and commemoration.
