Discover Marcoiano: Holiday Apartment, Nature and Culture
Marcoiano combines trails through a largely unspoilt natural landscape with sacred art, medieval traces and a festival announced for 2026. Hikers turn their attention to the Passo dell’Osteria Bruciata, while those interested in culture focus on Santa Maria a Marcoiano and the Museo d’arte sacra Beato Angelico in Vicchio; the Festa Popolare adds a culinary and musical accent.
Hiking trails between Marcoiano and the Passo dell’Osteria Bruciata
One of the nine circular trails established by the municipality, I Percorsi dell’Asfodelo, leads from Marcoiano via Castellana to the Passo dell’Osteria Bruciata. The pass can also be reached via Sentiero 50/a if hikers turn towards Paracchia. The two route descriptions clearly differ: the circular trail runs via Castellana, while Sentiero 50/a specifies the turn towards Paracchia.
Santa Maria a Marcoiano and Sacred Art
Two of the three bells in the square bell tower of Santa Maria a Marcoiano were cast in 1385 and 1585. On its right-hand side, the church also preserves the chapel of the Compagnia della SS. Vergine. A panel painting from the Florentine school depicting the enthroned Virgin and Child between Saints Macarius and Antonius Abbas is now kept in the Museo d’arte sacra Beato Angelico in Vicchio.
Oratorio di Ponte all’Olmo and Pilgrimage Routes
The Oratorio di Ponte all’Olmo was incorporated into the church of Santa Maria in 1568 and has long served as a place of rest and prayer for pilgrims travelling north from the Florentine plain. The circular trail leads from Marcoiano to the pass, while the pilgrims travelled north from the Florentine plain.
Il Poggio and the History of the Place
In Il Poggio, an elevated location beyond the centre of Marcoiano, extensive remains of old buildings and the ruins of a fortress belonging to the Cadolingi can be seen. Before 1309, Marcoiano was an important reference point on the transport route leading over the Passo dell’Osteria Bruciata, which provided access to Romagna.
Nature along the Tavaiano Stream
Marcoiano can be reached via a municipal road that runs along the left bank of the Tavaiano stream through a largely unspoilt natural landscape with forests and cultivated land. On the approach, the Tavaiano stream serves as a geographic reference point for the access road.
The Festa Popolare Announced for 2026
The 42nd edition of the Festa Popolare was announced for Marcoiano in 2026. Live music and dancing with orchestras from the surrounding area were planned for this edition. The menu for the 2026 Festa Popolare featured tortelli, stewed wild boar, fried frogs and grilled meat. The announced edition therefore includes live music, dancing and a menu.
