Bagnaia Between Bay and Island History

Bagnaia lies on the bay of the same name, protected to the south by Punta Pina and to the north by Punta degli Scarpellini. The Fosso di Bagnaia stream, which flows down from Monte Volterraio, runs through the village. The beach at Baia di Bagnaia is about 300 meters long. Sand and pebbles characterize the shore, while the seabed consists of fine gravel.

Beach, Snorkeling and Trails

Bagnaia is a starting point for snorkeling and exploring Elba’s underwater world. The network of footpaths and cycle routes also includes the shorter north–south crossing from Bagnaia to Porto Azzurro. Spiaggia di Bagnaia, a beach, is also located nearby.

Salt Pans, Harbor and Shipyard

Between 1742 and 1746, Grand Duke Francesco II of Lorraine had salt pans built in Bagnaia. In 1752, he also had a harbor built there for stationing the grand ducal fleet. Another trace of the area’s history is the Cantiere Elba shipyard: Giuseppe Cacciò founded it in Bagnaia in 1946, where the wooden ships Elba Ia and Bagnaia were built, among others.

Fortresses, Garden and Hermitage

The Fortezza del Volterraio is located nearby. The park administration restored the fortress, which can once again be visited today. It stands at 395 meters above sea level in a rocky setting with panoramic views. Guided tours include trekking and admission to the fortress; advance reservation is required. The summit of Monte Capannello offers a 360-degree view across the Bagnaia valley toward the Fortezza del Volterraio.

L’Orto dei Semplici extends across an area of about one hectare near the Eremo di Santa Caterina. The garden was established in 1997 as a place of study for the plant diversity of Elba and the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Information panels explain the plants collected, their characteristics, and their traditional medicinal and culinary uses. The nearby Eremo di Santa Caterina probably dates back to the Romanesque period and was expanded and remodeled in 1634. It was built on the remains of a hilltop fortress constructed by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC. Traditionally, a festival is celebrated at the hermitage every year on the Monday after Easter. Guided excursions along the nearby trails start from the CEA “Franco Franchini”.

Near Bagnaia are Castello del Volterraio, a castle, and the Museo Nazionale Delle Residenze Napoleoniche, a museum. Forte Stella, a fortress, and Villa di San Martino, a palace, are also located nearby. Beaches in the surrounding area include Spiaggia di Nisporto, Spiaggia della Padulella and Spiaggia di Capo Bianco. The Museo archeologico del Distretto minerario di Rio nell’Elba displays archaeological finds from the island of Elba. Bagnaia is also home to the Complesso Residenziale Sant'Anna residential complex, which was built between 1974 and 1991 to designs by architects Roberto Gabetti and Aimaro Isola.
