Hiking routes with different durations

For active days, the circular route follows Sentieri Elba Nos. 181 and 180, Provincial Road No. 25 and Sentiero Elba No. 157. It connects Marciana Marina, Poggio and Marciana and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes. GTE Stage 3 leads from Procchio to Poggio, is 11.84 km long and has an average walking time of 5 hours. The circular route is designed as a closed trail through three towns, while the GTE stage starts in Procchio and ends in Poggio. As a result, planning a hiking day around Poggio involves different types of routes and time frames.

Nature along the trails

The route of Sentieri Elba Nos. 181 and 180 passes through holm oak forests (Quercus ilex), dense Mediterranean maquis dominated by alaterno (Rhamnus alaternus) and Spanish broom (Spartium junceum). It also includes tree heath–strawberry tree communities with Erica arborea and strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), as well as a man-made pine forest resulting from reforestation. Another fixed point of reference is the Percorso Spirituale from Poggio: it begins in the hamlet’s Piazza del Castagneto, which is entirely paved with granite slabs. The route therefore includes holm oak forest, dense Mediterranean maquis, tree heath–strawberry tree communities and pine forest resulting from reforestation.

Explore churches and the villagescape

The churches also give Poggio a richly layered historical character. The Chiesa di San Niccolò combines the functions of a church and a fortress; two bastions stand at the sides of the façade. The Chiesa di San Defendente is located in Poggio and was built at the beginning of the 16th century. It was renovated in 1876.
