Marciana Marina combines clear coastal landscapes, maritime history and distinctive island traditions. At the old harbour and along the coast, beaches and rocks lie on the Tyrrhenian Sea; there are also the Torre degli Appiani, the Chiesa di Santa Chiara, diving areas and specialities from Elba. Il Cotone is the oldest settlement in Marciana Marina and has preserved its original maritime character.

Beaches between the harbour, rocks and Mediterranean nature

The few-kilometre-long coast of Marciana Marina includes pebble beaches, urban beaches and a single sandy beach that was only recently created within the harbour area. Crystal-clear water, rocks sloping down towards the Tyrrhenian Sea and lush Mediterranean vegetation characterise the landscape. Spiaggia della Fenicia is the beach closest to Marciana Marina and is considered suitable for children. Those looking for a more secluded coastal spot can discover Spiaggia della Fenicetta, which is reached via a concrete path between the rocks. Spiaggia della Crocetta is a wild cove surrounded by largely untouched nature. Spiaggia della Cala is located near Marciana Marina and is considered a quiet beach that is relatively difficult to find and access.

History along the Lungomare and in Il Cotone

One of the area’s prominent historic buildings is the Torre degli Appiani. It is a 16th-century observation bastion, built as a defensive and observation structure to protect and control the bay of Marciana Marina. The most widespread interpretation dates its construction to 1558–1562 under Jacopo VI Appiano. The Chiesa di Santa Chiara, an 18th-century church, also stands on the Lungomare of Marciana Marina.

Il Cotone is the oldest settlement in Marciana Marina. The first houses were built in the 16th century on the cliff that protected the harbour. Il Cotone developed from a fishing village and preserved its original maritime character.

Sailing, diving and special local experiences

The old harbour of Marciana Marina is a destination for sailing enthusiasts. Marciana Marina is also a starting point for dives; several headlands accessible from the harbour within a few minutes provide entry points to the diving areas. Film fans may recognise the waterfront: Marciana Marina served as a filming location for the television series I delitti del BarLume. In the series, the waterfront of Marciana Marina represents the fictional coastal town of Pineta.

Historic working environments and local events are also part of the townscape. One of the last two tuna-fishing stations still operating on Elba was historically located along the coast of Marciana Marina. La Tagliagambe took place in June as a cycling and running competition. On 11 and 12 August, Marciana Marina celebrated the patronal feast of Saint Chiara with religious ceremonies, processions on land and water, fireworks and concerts in the square.

Island cuisine and local traditions

Typical bakeries in Marciana Marina continue to bake Gallette, which are essential for preparing Panzanella, a typical summer dish from the island of Elba. Schiaccia briaca is traditionally paired with Aleatico, the wine of the island of Elba.
