Castle, Museum and Church Art

Castello Grifeo di Partanna is a medieval building on the slopes of a hill around which the town of Partanna developed. It is one of the best-preserved castles in western Sicily. The castle houses the Museo civico della preistoria del Basso Belice. It mainly displays finds from excavations carried out in Contrada Stretto since the 1980s, as well as from necropolises in the Belìce area.

On 24 April 2026, the reopening of Castello Grifeo to the public was announced. Chiesa Madre was designed by Baron Baldassarre Grifeo in 1536 and was not consecrated until 1676. It is one of Partanna’s most impressive architectural landmarks. It contains sculptures by Francesco Laurana, stucco work by Serpotta and a wooden organ carved by Natale Pugliesi.

Archaeological Traces and Sacred Sites

About three kilometres east of Partanna, the Parco Archeologico dello Stretto is located in Contrada Stretto. The structures there are thought to have served both a water-related and a ritual function. Particularly impressive is the “Cranio Trapanato”: a surgical procedure was presumably carried out there around 5,000 years ago, and the patient survived for at least one year. The find combines archaeological depth with a very tangible human story.

The Santuario della Madonna della Libera stands in Contrada Montagna, a modern reinforced-concrete building with an elliptical ground plan. It was built by the architect Baldassare Antonini and stands on the ruins of a 19th-century church dedicated to the Santuario. This church was destroyed in the earthquake of 15 January 1968. The present-day building and its history make this site another example of how the present and memory come together in Partanna.

Festivals and Regional Specialities

The Sagra della Cipolla Rossa di Partanna is part of the region’s culinary tradition. During the 2026 edition, visitors were able to sample numerous specialities prepared with red onions and discover and purchase typical products from the Valle del Belice directly from the producers. The Madonna della Libera festival takes place on the first Sunday in October; at that time, the Santuario is the destination of pilgrimages by residents of Partanna and worshippers from surrounding towns.
