Archaeology and art between Mozia and Lilibeo

The Museo Giuseppe Whitaker on Mozia is housed in Giuseppe Whitaker’s former residence and preserves numerous finds from the excavations carried out there. The museum also houses the “statua del giovinetto”, a testament to the Classical era that was discovered at the end of the 1970s during an excavation campaign on Mozia. In antiquity, Mozia was an important trading centre for exchange between East and West.

The Museo archeologico regionale “Baglio Anselmi” houses the wreck of a Punic ship. Its exhibition of underwater finds includes transport amphorae, anchor stocks and the cargo of Arab-Norman wrecks found off Lido Signorino.

In the Lilibeo Archaeological Park, the Roman insula includes the site of a large villa from the 3rd century AD with thermal baths, cisterns and the remains of an early Christian necropolis. The Flemish Triptych is a 16th-century work attributed to the Master of the Von Groote Adoration, a representative of the Antwerp School. The Convento del Carmine now houses a municipal art gallery with a permanent collection of more than 750 works of national and international standing.

Urban history and wine tradition

The Monumento ai Mille is a modern structure that preserves and commemorates the history of the Mille. It contains photographs and documents about the Mille and the entire historical era, and includes an information centre for visitors to the city. Marsala’s Holy Week includes a Via Crucis with live performers passing through the city’s main streets on Maundy Thursday, as well as a depiction of the Crucifixion that same evening.

The Strada del Vino route “Nel cuore di Marsala, fra storia e archeologia” is an urban tour that can be completed on foot. In the historic Palazzo Fici, the route includes an introduction to the area and an initial tasting of local wines.

Lagoon, islands and water sports

The Isole dello Stagnone archipelago covers an area of 2,000 ha; the Riserva Naturale Orientata includes the lagoon and the islands of Mozia, Santa Maria and Schola. Along the coast around the Stagnone, there are schools for windsurfing, kitesurfing, canoeing and sailing; the entire area has become a meeting place for water sports enthusiasts. From Capo Boeo, you can see the coast, the Egadi Islands, the Stagnone and Mount Erice.

A hidden world of stone

The Parco delle Cave is considered an underground landscape of calcarenite quarries, known as a hidden city and shaped by the work of the quarrymen. The extraction of calcarenite sandstone there can be traced back to the 7th century BC; blocks of tuff were first quarried for the construction of Mozia and later for ancient Lilibeo.
