Campobello di Mazara: Coast and Cultural Heritage

Campobello di Mazara lies on a plain at 100 metres above sea level. The surrounding landscape is characterised by extensive fields with centuries-old olive trees, vineyards, citrus groves and almond orchards.

Tre Fontane: Beach and Landscape

With its beach stretching for more than six kilometres, Tre Fontane offers a distinctive coastal area. The water there is considered clean, clear and shallow; Tre Fontane is also regarded as suitable for families with children. It held the Bandiera Verde award from 2013 to 2023.

Ancient Stoneworking at the Cave di Cusa

The Cave di Cusa supplied the large capitals and columns for Temple G. Its exceptional state of preservation makes it possible to study all stages of ancient stoneworking. The site was used from the 6th century BC until the end of the Greek city. The Punic conquest brought quarrying to an abrupt halt. This makes a visit an illustrative encounter with technical working processes and the history of ancient architecture, without restricting you to a single era.

Village History, Architecture and Coastal Tradition

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in the Baglio Florio in Contrada Cave di Cusa in Campobello di Mazara. Its collection includes objects from local rural occupations, including fishing, carpentry, blacksmithing and rope-making. Until the end of the 19th century, the Baglio Florio was inhabited by farm workers who cultivated the surrounding estate year-round or seasonally.

The townscape also features the Torre dell’Orologio, which reflects elements of Classical Renaissance and Sicilian-Norman architecture. Construction began in 1858, and the exterior decoration was completed in 1877. The Chiesa di Santa Maria al Presepe is a neoclassical basilica with three naves and a rectangular, shell-vaulted apse. It houses a carved crucifix by Frate Umile da Petralia (1580–1639).

The history of the coast is also part of the character of the surrounding area. The Tonnara di Torretta-Granitola was one of the most prosperous and important tuna fisheries in the Mediterranean region. Until the 19th century, the Torre di Tre Fontane formed part of Sicily’s coastal defence and observation system. Today it is inaccessible and partly collapsed. This clear distinction between accessible places to visit and a structure that is inaccessible today helps you plan your holiday days realistically.

The second edition of the Nocellara Expo in Campobello di Mazara promoted Nocellara del Belìce DOP, as well as its olive oil and table olives. In 2024, the event included 22 producers of oil and table olives. Campobello di Mazara is also connected to a network of roads and motorways.
