Landscapes, springs and karst formations

The town centre lies on a slope at the foot of Monte Fanusi, 225 m above sea level, and is surrounded by gardens, orchards and olive groves. Above the centre, the underground drainage system emerges in Contrada Sorgive at 376.68 m above sea level; it feeds the Agnello, Bosco and Golfone springs. The limestone of Scillato is also part of the landscape: it consists mainly of calcium carbonate, was formed beginning in the Triassic period and, through karstification processes, led to the formation of caves, caverns, shafts and tunnels.

Culture and prehistory in Scillato

The Santuario Maria Santissima della Catena houses a white marble sculpture of the Madonna della Catena dating from 1570, attributed to the Gagini school. The Museo Civico di Scillato is dedicated to Giovanni Mannino, an outstanding figure in studies of the prehistory of western Sicily. At the Vallone Inferno archaeological site, excavation campaigns have so far documented the last 7,000 years of Madonie prehistory.

The Archeodromo delle Madonie at Mulino Famunia suttanu, Contrada Fondaco, reconstructs two furnished prehistoric huts: one based on the Piano Vento settlement in Palma di Montechiaro, the other on the village of Roccazzo in Mazara del Vallo. Staff accompany groups of visitors, school classes and families there during experimental archaeology activities. Using materials available at the time, they recreate prehistoric actions and techniques. The patronal festival of the Madonna della Catena is celebrated every year on 20 August and includes a procession through the town.

Mills and the Museo dell’Acqua

Scillato has 13 mills built between 1156 and 1800. Most have fallen into ruin or have been incorporated into other buildings; the municipality of Scillato acquired and restored some of them, although little of the original milling equipment remains. Mulino Rasu was the last mill to cease grain milling operations, in the 1960s.

The Museo dell’Acqua is located in Mulino Paraturi. The mill operated in the 19th century and was the only one to use zabbara. During guided tours, the processing and extraction of the fibres are demonstrated there for educational purposes. Today, Mulino Paraturi is a centre for lifelong learning and home to the Museo dell’Acqua; explanatory panels and models illustrate various aspects of water and its cycle.
