Palazzo Adriano combines distinctive religious and architectural heritage with trails through river landscapes and the special film connection of the Museo del Cinema “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”.

Film, Churches and Local History

The Castello Borbonico stands on the Colle di San Nicola. It was built around the 18th century around a tower dating from the time of Frederick II, which is dated to approximately the year 1230. The Santuario Maria SS. delle Grazie, a Greek-Byzantine church on a hill about one kilometre from Palazzo Adriano, is also part of the area’s cultural diversity. The present building was constructed before 1566; as early as 1550, a simple rural chapel stood there.

The Museo del Cinema “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso” displays memorabilia and original photographs from the filming and backstage area of the Oscar-winning film “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”. The Museo Real Casina is located in the former stables of the Castello Borbonico on Via Salita Real Casina. The Chiesa Santa Maria del Lume was built from 1740 onwards and follows the Latin rite. Over the centuries, an Albanian community of the Greek-Byzantine rite and a Roman community of the Latin rite lived together in Palazzo Adriano. The historic urban structure also dates back to the resettlement in the 15th century by an Albanian military colony.

Trails between Rivers, Forest and Mountain Views

The Percorso Montagna delle Rose starts on the SR15 at kilometre 2 south of Palazzo Adriano and leads along unpaved roads, mule tracks and paved paths. It offers panoramic views of the valley. Near a rocky outcrop there is a meadow where various orchid species bloom for almost the entire year; the Montagna delle Rose is 1,436 metres high.

The Percorso dei Mulini runs along the Sosio River and then follows the Torrente della Scala. Along the way, there is an opportunity to observe birds and wildlife in the Mediterranean maquis. After about 800 metres, the Sorgenti di San Calogero trail leads through a steeply descending section a short distance from the Cappella di San Calogero dei Latini.

The Riserva Naturale Monti di Palazzo Adriano e Valle del Sosio nature reserve also includes Palazzo Adriano. It features mature mixed oak forests, species-rich meadows with endemic species, the Sosio river system and specialised vegetation on vertical rock faces. The reserve’s most significant wooded area is the Bosco di Sant’Adriano, which is dominated by holm oaks.

Festivals and Regional Specialities

Palazzo Adriano’s religious calendar includes the Epiphany festival “a vulata da Palumma” on 6 January. On 16 August, the large “A Fèra” is one of the religious festivals. During the procession, men and women walk barefoot through the streets of the town.

Religious holidays also provide an opportunity to try traditional Easter sweets and breads such as Pane di San Giuseppe, Pane di San Nicola, tabisca, muffuletta and fried gostedde.
